Description
Lilith is the ancient founder of the Dark Clan and direct ancestor of Yūko Yoshida, estimated to be 4,000 to 5,000 years old. Sealed within a clay statue roughly 5,000 years ago after a conflict with the Light Clan, the exact circumstances of her sealing remain unclear even to her. The statue passed between ancient civilizations across the Orient, Egypt, and Mesopotamia, during which time Lilith magically expanded her lineage by creating "soul children." Her connection to the outside world faded for approximately 2,000 years due to waning magic, until she reawakened about ten years before the main events.
She communicates primarily through Yūko's dreams and receives offerings placed near her statue, which functions as a doorstop in the Yoshida home. A switch at the statue's base allows her to temporarily possess Yūko's body, though prolonged use strains Yūko physically. Lilith assigns Yūko missions to break the seal and revive the Dark Clan, initially instructing her to defeat magical girls and collect their blood. Despite proclaiming herself the "Witch of Eternal Darkness" and aspiring to world domination, her personality is comical, mischievous, and prone to troublemaking. She harbors a surprising fear of darkness from centuries of confinement in pitch blackness and becomes easily attached to modern comforts like cola, snacks, and casual clothing such as sweatshirts with humorous prints.
Physically, Lilith resembles an older Yūko but possesses tanned skin, long wavy blonde hair, and a broken right horn. She stands notably short at 144 cm and has a flat chest, a trait often mocked. When manifesting in dreams or through possession, she favors relaxed attire but also designs revealing costumes for demons and magical girls. Her abilities include dream manipulation and subconscious intrusion, largely confined to Yūko due to the seal. She holds extensive knowledge of magic, demon history, and academic subjects, occasionally assisting Yūko with schoolwork and achieving high scores.
Her relationships are complex: she shares a close, familial bond with Yūko, who affectionately calls her "Shamicen." Seiko Yoshida treats her casually, once nearly selling her statue online. She maintains friendly, eccentric interactions with magical girls like Momo Chiyoda and Mikan Hinatsuki, acting as a whimsical grandmother figure. Local children mockingly call her "Gomi Aneki" when she collects river trash to fulfill a contract.
Key developments involve her use of homunculus vessels created by Momo and Shion Ogura. Small vessels allow limited movement, while a life-sized vessel forged from leftover materials grants up to seven days of fragile physical presence. After an encounter with the water god Mikazuchi, who embeds a Dragon Orb within her, she gains extended time in the real world contingent on collecting 9 kg of river trash daily; failure brings severe consequences. The "Ancestor Statue Switch" enables body possession but was temporarily disabled by Momo before Yūko reactivated it.
Throughout her arc, Lilith shifts from a sealed entity focused on clan restoration to an active, though constrained, participant in the human world. Her comical traits and vulnerabilities—like her fear of darkness, love for hot springs, and low alcohol tolerance—contrast her ancient origins, highlighting her role as a source of humor and unexpected warmth.
