TV Special
Description
Benten belongs to the Fukujin alien clan, named after the goddess Benzaiten but devoid of her divine traits. Her planet merges Chinese deity influences with motorcycle punk culture. As a God of Luck, she clashes annually with Lum's Oni clan in a massive Setsubun "fill the bucket" battle, continuing a rivalry rooted in their childhood schooling alongside Oyuki and Ran. During youth, Benten and Lum stirred chaos together while Oyuki watched and Ran intervened. Though Ran was once part of their group, Benten now distrusts her scheming nature. Benten fiercely prioritizes Lum as her most loyal galactic friend, visiting Earth spontaneously beyond the Setsubun tradition.
Her personality fuses violence with nonchalance. As a self-proclaimed "space biker chick," she wields her signature body chain alongside bazookas, machine guns, and explosives. She curses habitually, gambles enthusiastically, and tackles fights like warfare. Beneath this aggression, she upholds a strict honor code, displays sharp humor, and exhibits emotional perceptiveness—particularly with Ryūnosuke Fujinami. Teasing about Ryūnosuke's romantic feelings triggers flustered embarrassment, revealing vulnerability under her toughness. She collaborates effectively with Ryūnosuke, like retrieving a stolen motorcycle to find a kitten, despite early clashes over gender identity.
In "The Obstacle Course Swim Meet" OVA, Benten arrives with Oyuki at Ataru Moroboshi's house to find wind chimes—intended as cooling gifts from Oyuki—multiplying wildly, icing the home and freezing Ataru's parents. After Oyuki collects them, Benten flees harassment from the Three Daughters Gang on her cherished red airbike, which she maintains herself. Crashing into Tomobiki High's chaotic swim meet, her arrival combines with the gang's pursuit and Lum and Ataru's accidental release of the wind chimes. This escalates pandemonium as the chimes multiply, freezing the school and nearly all present. Her actions directly cause the event's disastrous outcome—where only Kotatsu-neko avoids defeat—highlighting her role in unpredictable, large-scale disruption and her consistent, if chaotic, support for friends.
Benten appears as an attractive young woman with spiky red hair in most media, though black in the original 1980s anime. Her signature outfit includes a skimpy red metal bikini, arm protectors, boots, and a chain draped over her shoulder. This chain serves as her UFO key, fitting a chain-shaped door lock. Outfit details like color or occasional missing arm protectors vary across appearances. In "The Obstacle Course Swim Meet," her skin is notably tanned instead of her usual pale tone.
