Description
Sakuta Azusagawa is a high school student marked by social isolation stemming from false rumors about a "Hospital Incident," where he was wrongly accused of violently hospitalizing others. This reputation originated when he actually became hospitalized himself after developing three deep, bleeding claw marks across his chest. These injuries were linked to his younger sister Kaede's struggles with Adolescence Syndrome, which caused her spontaneous physical injuries and dissociative identity disorder triggered by online bullying, resulting in memory loss and a new personality. During this difficult time, Sakuta met Shoko Makinohara on Shichirigahama Beach; her advice to live kindly became his guiding philosophy. In solidarity with Kaede and to prevent further harm, he discarded his phone into the ocean, an act that inadvertently fueled the damaging rumor.
Sakuta consistently presents a deadpan demeanor and blunt speech, calmly voicing his thoughts regardless of the situation. He maintains a stoic and socially detached exterior, largely indifferent to societal judgment or school social hierarchies, which he terms the "atmosphere." His indifference stems from a belief that resisting rumors is futile, though he acknowledges their pain. He prioritizes the support of even one person over universal acceptance, stating he could endure global hatred if one individual needed him. Despite his reserved nature, he demonstrates profound compassion, especially toward victims of bullying or Adolescence Syndrome. He frequently employs sarcastic and lewd humor, particularly directed at his girlfriend Mai and female friends like Rio Futaba or Tomoe Koga, though these remarks are intended as lighthearted jokes without malice. His personality is defined by selflessness, kindness, and a snarky wit, often manifesting as blunt honesty and a willingness to defy social norms for others' wellbeing.
His chest scars occasionally reopen during intense emotional distress, such as when Kaede relapsed into Adolescence Syndrome. Physically, he is of average height with brown hair and eyes. His standard school attire includes an unbuttoned light-brown blazer over a white dress shirt, a red tie, blue pants, and brown outdoor shoes.
Sakuta's relationship with Mai Sakurajima began when he alone could see her during her Adolescence Syndrome-induced invisibility. He helped restore her visibility by publicly confessing his love, solidifying their romantic bond. Their relationship involves mutual teasing and deep trust, with Mai supporting Sakuta through subsequent challenges. He shares a protective and supportive dynamic with his sister Kaede, having moved into an apartment with her after their parents struggled to accept her dissociative identity. He encourages her gradual reintegration into society, including her goal to attend his high school, though her eventual choice of an online alternative program reflects his respect for her autonomy.
Other key relationships include his friendship with science club member Rio Futaba, whom he consults on Adolescence Syndrome cases; Tomoe Koga, whom he assisted in overcoming a time-loop syndrome and maintains a platonic, teasing rapport; Nodoka Toyohama, Mai's half-sister who remains wary of him; and Shoko Makinohara, his first love whose later revelation as a heart transplant recipient intertwined their fates, leading to timelines where Sakuta's death enabled her survival.
Sakuta actively assists others experiencing Adolescence Syndrome, including Mai's invisibility, Tomoe's time loops, Rio's personality splitting, and Nodoka's body-swapping with Mai. His approach evolves from direct intervention to supportive guidance, notably during Kaede's attempts to reenter society. In her pursuit of attending his high school, he provides tutoring alongside Mai and Nodoka. When past trauma resurfaces during her entrance exams, causing her Adolescence Syndrome symptoms to reappear, he respects her subsequent decision to enroll in an online school after introducing her to Uzuki Hirokawa, a student successfully balancing online education with an idol career. This shift underscores his growth toward empowering others' choices rather than imposing solutions.
Sakuta later enters university, taking on roles as a cram school lecturer and waiter while navigating relationships with new acquaintances like Miori Mitou and Ikumi Akagi. His foundational traits—self-sacrifice, defiance of social pressure, and unwavering support for those he cares about—persist through this transition, reflecting his enduring commitment to living by the principle of kindness imparted by Shoko.
