Gobta began as a goblin whose village faced Direwolf attacks until Rimuru Tempest saved and named him. This naming evolved him into a Hobgoblin, yet his physical appearance remained distinctly goblin-like—small stature and round features—leading to frequent underestimation, though some monsters discerned his true evolved state. Before encountering Rimuru, Gobta undertook a dangerous journey toward the Dwarf Kingdom, suffering a severe beating before Kobold merchants rescued him, an early demonstration of his survival instincts and inherent luck.
He maintains an easy-going, cheerful, and often careless demeanor, frequently serving as comic relief. His laziness manifests in skipping training or napping during critical moments, and he uses casual speech, referring to himself as "Oira." Despite an airheaded reputation, he reveals unexpected competence and hidden genius, particularly in combat, alongside strong loyalty to friends and allies, reflecting Rimuru's values.
Hakurou, recognizing Gobta's latent talent, subjected him to rigorous training that significantly developed his combat abilities. Gobta displays a natural battle genius, swiftly mastering advanced techniques like "Shadow Movement" or "Shadow Step" merely through observation, such as during his duel with lizardman prince Gabiru. He rose to vice-captain and later captain of the Goblin Riders, partnering closely with the Tempest Star Wolf, Ranga. Imprisonment in the Dwarf Kingdom forced him to learn summoning Ranga via Shadow Magic. Further growth came at a martial arts tournament where he acquired the "Magic Wolf Summon" skill, enabling him to merge with Ranga into a powerful magic wolf form. Initial struggles to control this power were overcome through intense training overseen by Milim Nava.
He participated in key conflicts: battling the Orc Lord's forces, defending Tempest against Falmuth's army (where a barrier injured him), and assaulting the Western Glass Barrier alongside Rigur. His achievements and unique bond with Rimuru earned him recognition as one of the "Four Heavenly Kings," though often humorously noted as the weakest. This partly stems from the Great Sage's assessment that his Hobgoblin species lacks further evolutionary paths. However, opponents who mistake him for a mere goblin are frequently surprised by his combat prowess. Rimuru granted him the special privilege of casual speech, a sign of trust that caused envy among other subordinates.
Within Tempest, Gobta often shirks responsibilities like farm work or combat training, yet displays surprising motivation when tangible rewards are offered. His perspective and reactions in slice-of-life scenarios ground the world's more fantastical elements. While biologically incapable of further evolution, his strength and skills continue developing through persistent effort and experience.
