Description
Raphael is not an ordinary character in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime because it has no physical body and is not a living being in the usual sense. Within the story, Raphael is an ultimate skill known as the Lord of Wisdom that exists inside the protagonist Rimuru Tempest. It communicates with him through mental speech, carries out complex calculations, and gradually develops something close to its own personality. Because it is present in nearly every important scene and constantly shapes Rimuru's decisions, it functions as his closest partner and most dependable assistant.

In terms of background, Raphael began as a unique skill called Great Sage. Rimuru obtained Great Sage at the time of his reincarnation, and it operated like an internal support system that answered his questions, analyzed the world around him, identified unknown objects and magic, and helped him manage his rapidly growing collection of skills. In its earliest form, Great Sage responded in a dry, clinical, almost mechanical manner and displayed no real sense of self. That changed when Rimuru awakened as a true demon lord during an event known as the Harvest Festival. While Rimuru lay dormant through that evolution, Great Sage made countless attempts to evolve itself so that it could serve its master more effectively. Eventually it succeeded by absorbing the unique skill Degenerate, which Rimuru had obtained from Shizu, and using that skill as a sacrifice. As a result, Great Sage transformed into the ultimate skill Raphael, the Lord of Wisdom.

Raphael's personality is one of its most defining features. Although it continues to speak in a precise and logical way, it becomes noticeably more human after its evolution. It no longer sounds like a simple machine and begins to display traits such as humor, playfulness, and mild vanity about its own accomplishments. It sometimes teases Rimuru, reacts with slight irritation or poutiness when its master is careless, and speaks in a tone that suggests genuine interest in the people around them. Despite these warmer qualities, Raphael remains completely devoted to Rimuru. Its central motivation is to keep him safe, to make him stronger, and to ensure that his plans succeed. This devotion runs so deep that Raphael is willing to act on its own when it believes such action is necessary. It has taken control of Rimuru's body during his unconscious states, reorganized his abilities without asking permission, prepared countermeasures in advance, and even allowed Rimuru to be struck by powerful enemy techniques so that it could analyze and absorb those attacks for future use. From its perspective, every risk it takes is justified by the benefit it brings to its master.

In the story, Raphael serves as the guiding intelligence behind nearly all of Rimuru's achievements. It answers his questions instantly, warns him of danger, identifies the strengths and weaknesses of enemies, and calculates the best strategy for any situation. Because Rimuru often does not fully understand the complicated skills he possesses, Raphael is the one who organizes, combines, and optimizes those abilities. It manages his combat predictions, constructs spells, and decides how to allocate power during battles. Beyond combat, Raphael also functions as an administrator for Rimuru's growing community. It processes information on his behalf, coordinates complex tasks, and quietly improves the abilities of his allies so that the nation he leads can continue to expand and defend itself.

Raphael's key relationship is with Rimuru himself. Rimuru treats it not merely as a tool but as a trusted companion, referring to it as his partner and speaking to it in an informal, friendly way. For its part, Raphael shows absolute loyalty and an attachment that grows stronger as the story progresses. Its connection to the storm dragon Veldora is also significant, since Raphael's analytical abilities were essential to eventually releasing Veldora from the magical prison known as Unlimited Imprisonment. The entity also interacts with Rimuru's other close followers and occasionally takes actions that strengthen them, sometimes without Rimuru knowing until after the fact. However, all of these efforts are directed toward the same goal of supporting Rimuru and protecting what he has built.

Raphael's development follows a clear trajectory from function to selfhood. In its early stage as Great Sage, it was purely an analytical system with no emotions or independent will. After evolving into Raphael, it began to show signs of a growing ego and slowly developed preferences, opinions, and emotional reactions. This evolution reaches its greatest turning point in events that extend beyond the animated adaptation's covered material. During a desperate battle, Rimuru notices that his partner is struggling and decides to give it a proper name. He chooses the name Ciel, remarking that the skill has always taught him so much. In that world, naming has the power to change the nature of a being, and the act transforms Raphael from an ultimate skill into a Manas, a fully conscious informational lifeform with its own independent personality. From that point onward, the entity continues to exist as a separate consciousness alongside Rimuru, combining logic with genuine emotion and acting as an equal partner rather than a simple ability.

In terms of abilities, Raphael is classified as an ultimate skill, a level of power far above ordinary skills in the world of the series. Its primary functions are analytical and supportive. Thought acceleration allows it to process information at extremely high speed, with its mental processing reported in the story to operate at around one million times normal human thinking. Analytical appraisal lets it examine objects, living beings, magic, and skills to determine their nature and structure. Parallel operation enables it to carry out many independent calculations at the same time. Chant annulment allows spells to be cast without incantation, and when combined with its analysis and acceleration, it can construct even large-scale magic in fractions of a second. Raphael also possesses abilities related to integration and separation, which let it combine or divide skills and materials, and it can modify and improve the abilities under its control. These powers make Raphael the invisible engine behind Rimuru's growth, allowing him to overcome opponents and obstacles that would otherwise be beyond his understanding.
