Nemo is a young boy with short, unkempt dark brown hair and brown eyes, living in New York City. He sneaks pies at night despite promising his mother not to, a recurring sweet tooth overcome only when Princess Camille lures him to Slumberland with a box of cookies.
His journey starts when figures from a circus parade, led by Professor Genius, enter his bedroom during sleep, inviting him to become Princess Camille's playmate in Slumberland. King Morpheus secretly intends for Nemo to become his heir and gifts him a golden key opening any door in the kingdom, with a strict prohibition against unlocking the dragon-insignia door.
Initially reserved and immature, Nemo's curiosity leads him to befriend Flip, a mischievous cigar-chomping clown disliked in Slumberland. Influenced by Flip, Nemo unlocks the forbidden door, releasing the Nightmare King and enabling Morpheus's capture. Intense guilt overwhelms Nemo, compelling him to accept responsibility despite Flip's attempts to shift blame.
Determined to fix his mistake, Nemo embarks on a perilous quest to rescue Morpheus from Nightmare Land, accompanied by Professor Genius, Princess Camille, Flip, and his loyal pet flying squirrel Icarus. Icarus remains fiercely protective and rarely leaves Nemo's side. For the journey, Nemo wears practical exploration attire: a long-sleeved shirt with a blue sailor collar and a red neckerchief.
In Nightmare Land, Nemo encounters shapeshifting goblins called the Boomps. His decision to treat them kindly proves pivotal, as they later help him reach Nightmare Castle. Inside, Nemo confronts the Nightmare King. He initially struggles to wield the royal scepter, forgetting its incantation, but receives the complete words via a letter from Morpheus delivered by the Boomps. In the climactic battle, Nemo channels all his strength through the scepter to destroy the Nightmare King, seemingly sacrificing his own life in a temporary Disney Death. Morpheus revives him using the scepter, acknowledging Nemo’s courage and growth into a "true prince."
This journey transforms Nemo from a naive, easily frightened boy into a proactive and resilient hero. He shifts from being gullible and prone to others’ influence to demonstrating leadership and accountability. His relationship with Princess Camille evolves from initial friction and her brattish tendencies to mutual respect and affection, culminating in a shared kiss before his return home. Awakening in his bed, Nemo apologizes to his mother for breaking his pie promise, showing newfound maturity. His parents reward this growth by agreeing to take him to the circus he previously missed.
The original comic strips show Nemo's Slumberland adventures consistently concluding with an abrupt awakening in the final panel, often due to falling out of bed or parental intervention. These dreams involve surreal challenges, encounters with Flip, and explorations of fantastical realms like Mars or Befuddle Hall, where dream fears such as falling or shattering delicate objects manifest.
