Description
Joe, born Junk Dog, is a nameless Megalo Boxer who emerges from the rigged underground fights of the Restricted Area, orchestrated by his manager Gansaku Nanbu. A life-altering encounter with reigning champion Yuri propels him into the Megalonia tournament under the forged identity "Joe." Defying norms, he earns renown as "Gearless Joe" by battling opponents without mechanical exoskeletons (Gears), cementing his reputation through sheer defiance.

Standing tall with dark olive skin, black hair, and a scarred physique—marked by a horizontal cheek scar and an X-shaped chest wound—his appearance shifts over time. Later years see him disguised under a beard and ragged attire, concealing his identity while donning a green military jacket adorned with a sergeant’s badge, hinting at an unconfirmed past.

Laid-back yet tenacious, Joe thrives on challenging formidable rivals, prioritizing personal integrity over accolades. His resilience shines in rapid recoveries from injuries and mid-fight tactical adaptability. Post-Megalonia victory, he retreats to a vegetable farm with Sachio, a young orphan companion, but spirals into addiction and self-exile seven years later. Adopting the alias "Nomad," he grapples with guilt over Nanbu’s death and estrangement from Sachio, who resents his abandonment during Nanbu’s final days.

Redemption arrives through Chief, an immigrant boxer, and Marla, who steer him toward sobriety. Chief’s fatal match injury reignites Joe’s resolve to reconcile with Sachio and confront past failures. A climactic bout against Mac Rosario—a cybernetically enhanced ex-champion—culminates in Joe’s retirement, signaling his transition from self-destruction to nurturing familial bonds.

His narrative intertwines with themes of undocumented immigration and marginalization, mirrored in Spanish-language episode titles and immigrant subplots depicting systemic discrimination. In the ring, Joe’s agility, endurance, and precision counterattacks overcome Gear-enhanced foes, leveraging improvisational tactics honed in underground brawls. His career oscillates between underdog triumphs and self-imposed exile, encapsulating a turbulent kinship with the sport that both elevates and haunts him.
