Description
Joe, originally called Junk Dog, is an undocumented inhabitant of a futuristic society's outskirts. Lacking legal citizenship or a birth name, he survives through participation in rigged underground Megalo Boxing matches, deliberately losing under manager Gansaku Nanbu to earn money. This arrangement fuels frustration and self-destructive behavior, including reckless motorcycle riding. His life shifts upon encountering reigning Megalonia champion Yuri, who defeats him in an unsanctioned match. This loss ignites Joe's resolve to pursue legitimate competition, leading him to acquire a fraudulent ID and enter the professional circuit under the ring name "Gearless Joe."
Physically, Joe stands 180 cm (5'11") tall with dark olive skin, black hair, and a muscular build. He accumulates numerous scars, including a distinctive J-shaped mark on his left cheek from Yuri and others sustained in fights. Early on, he wears a green military jacket with a sergeant's badge, suggesting an unconfirmed possible military association. Later, during his "Nomad" phase, he adopts a disheveled appearance with a beard to conceal his identity.
Outside the ring, Joe displays a laid-back, easygoing demeanor, rarely showing anger or distress. Inside the ring, he transforms into a fiercely determined and observant combatant. He values authentic challenges over fame or financial gain, refusing to compromise his fighting philosophy even under pressure from mentors like Nanbu. His primary motivation is testing his limits against worthy opponents, driven by a deep-seated love for the sport. This mindset evolves into self-destructive tendencies later, where he seeks physical punishment in fights to cope with unresolved guilt.
Key relationships shape his journey:
- **Nanbu**: Initially a manipulative figure forcing Joe to throw fights, their dynamic shifts as Nanbu becomes a genuine coach. Joe defies Nanbu's order to lose in the Megalonia semifinals, resulting in Nanbu losing his eyesight as punishment from Fujimaki. They reconcile, with Joe later joining Nanbu's farm after retiring.
- **Sachio**: A street orphan who provides analytical support during Joe's rise. Sachio views Joe as a symbol of hope for the marginalized, though their relationship strains later due to Joe's neglect.
- **Yuri**: Joe's rival and eventual mutual motivator. Their initial street encounter catalyzes Joe's ambition, culminating in a gearless championship match where Joe narrowly wins by knockout. Yuri sustains career-ending injuries, yet they maintain respect post-fight.
As a boxer, Joe relies on agility, precision striking, and exceptional durability instead of mechanical Gear enhancements. His "Gearless" style originates as a gimmick but becomes synonymous with his identity, symbolizing his rejection of artificial advantages. He excels at reading opponents' emotions and exploiting tactical weaknesses, often employing counterattacks as his signature strategy. His resilience allows him to endure severe punishment, amplified by his refusal to quit even when critically injured.
His development spans distinct phases:
- **Rise to Champion**: Using his new identity, Joe ascends from underground obscurity to Megalonia champion in three months. Key victories include gearless wins against higher-ranked opponents like Shark Samejima and a redemption match against Mikio Shirato, who initially blackmails him over his fake ID. He ultimately defeats Yuri in the finals, leaving both physically devastated.
- **Post-Championship Decline**: After vacating his title, Joe loses an exhibition match to Yuri's protégé, Edison Liu. Plagued by guilt, he adopts the alias "Nomad," drifting through underground rings while battling a painkiller addiction. His physical condition deteriorates, and he becomes detached from former allies like Sachio and Nanbu.
- **Redemption**: Meeting Chief, an immigrant leader, marks a turning point. Joe serves as Chief's cornerman while confronting his addiction. After Chief's death, Joe returns to his roots, reconnecting with Sachio and Nanbu. He eventually finds purpose by aiding undocumented immigrant communities, symbolizing his acceptance of his marginalized origins and commitment to atonement.
