Description
Duke Fleed, crown prince of Planet Fleed, saw his life shattered when King Vega's Vegan Empire attacked his home world. The invasion transformed his planet into a toxic wasteland, forcing Duke to flee by stealing the super robot Grendizer and escaping in a Spazer spacecraft. A Vegatron attack during his flight inflicted radiation poisoning. Guided by Grendizer's navigation, he crash-landed on Earth, where scientist Genzo Umon discovered him. To conceal his identity, Umon adopted him as Daisuke Umon. Duke then worked on the Makiba family ranch, forming strong bonds with Hikaru and Goro Makiba.

Living as Daisuke Umon, Duke adopted a human guise with shoulder-length brown hair, dark blue eyes, and a well-built physique. His classic Western attire featured a brown tasseled vest, yellow long-sleeve shirt, brown pants, and black boots. When piloting Grendizer, he wore a red and black flight suit inspired by Fleedian regalia, complete with red spiked decorations and a gray helmet sporting a yellow mask and green visor to hide his face. Gosaku Ōta's manga depicted him with a slimmer build and a hairstyle reminiscent of Koji Kabuto, though his pilot suit design remained consistent.

Duke possessed a level-headed personality burdened by profound guilt over failing to save Planet Fleed. His knowledge of Fleedian and other alien cultures proved extensive, and he often educated allies about Vegan threats. While his calm nature sometimes clashed with impulsive comrades like Koji Kabuto, he valued their camaraderie. Beneath his composed exterior, he wrestled with the weight of being his planet's sole survivor and the responsibilities tied to piloting Grendizer. In Ōta's manga, this internal conflict intensified into authoritarian tendencies, where he considered ruling Earth to shield it from both the Vegan Empire and human self-destruction, though he ultimately refrained after interventions from friends.

Key relationships defined Duke's journey. Dr. Genzo Umon became a respected father figure. Hikaru Makiba evolved from a ranch employer into a close confidante and romantic interest; she later piloted the Marine Spazer to aid his battles. Koji Kabuto, initially perceived as naive, became a trusted ally despite early disagreements over extraterrestrial diplomacy. Duke reunited with his sister, Maria Fleed, after she mistakenly sought vengeance against him as a Vegan collaborator. His betrothal to Princess Rubina of Vega ended tragically when King Vega betrayed Fleed; Rubina later sacrificed herself to save Duke from a Vegan assassin, cementing his resolve against the Vegan Empire.

Duke could generate his pilot suit organically, providing protection against hazards like lasers. His Fleedian physiology granted enhanced agility and accelerated healing. He mastered piloting Grendizer and auxiliary vehicles like the Spazer and the Dizer trike. In Ōta's manga, he also destroyed an underground city linked to Fleedian technology, fearing human misuse.

Duke's story arc varied across media. In the main timeline, he defended Earth from Vegan forces, reconciled with Maria, mourned Rubina's death, defeated King Vega, and returned to restore Planet Fleed. Ōta's manga depicted a darker path: discovering Dr. Umon's research into Fleedian artifacts, Duke nearly seized control of Earth to prevent destruction by humans and Vegans, only to trigger a cataclysm that wiped out civilization, leading him into stasis. In *Shin Mazinger ZERO*, Duke refrained from battling Vegan forces to avoid awakening the destructive entity Mazinger ZERO, honoring a promise to Koji Kabuto despite his desire to intervene in critical conflicts.
