Description
Ayame Soma, cursed by the Snake spirit of the Chinese Zodiac, possesses a biology acutely sensitive to temperature; exposure to extreme cold or heat transforms him into a white serpent. This vulnerability necessitates constant protection, often through umbrellas against the sun, and avoidance of harsh outdoor conditions. Ten years older than his brother Yuki, Ayame neglected him during their childhood. His deepest regret stems from a pivotal moment when a young Yuki, seeking rescue, clutched his sleeve only to be coldly dismissed.
During high school, Ayame served as student council president and formed the close-knit "Mabudachi Trio" with Shigure and Hatori Soma. His charismatic yet self-centered nature led him to thoughtlessly disregard romantic advances from a classmate, an action he later rued. As an adult, he channels his flamboyant personality into operating his namesake custom clothing boutique, specializing in romantic and extravagant costumes like frilly dresses and maid outfits. His seamstress and eventual wife, Mine Kuramae, assists him. Ayame founded the shop driven by a fear of insignificance and loneliness, desiring to create something that couldn't exist without him. He enthusiastically fulfills clients' unique requests, though his suggestive humor sometimes causes discomfort, such as inappropriate remarks made before Yuki and Tohru Honda.
Motivated by remorse, Ayame actively seeks reconciliation with Yuki. His attempts, often theatrical or misjudged, initially create friction, but he gradually demonstrates genuine support. A significant turning point occurs when he intervenes in a confrontation between Yuki and their controlling mother, challenging her manipulation and defending Yuki's autonomy, which slowly earns Yuki's acceptance.
Following the Zodiac curse's breaking, Ayame's immediate act is embracing Mine and confessing his love, symbolizing his freedom. He later marries Mine, fathers two children named Hibika and Chizuru, and maintains familial bonds. His nephew Mutsuki adores him, contrasting with his own son's occasional exasperation at his eccentricities. Ayame remains involved in Yuki's life, assisting him in finding a college apartment.
Throughout his journey, Ayame evolves from a self-absorbed figure into a more considerate individual. He directs his flamboyance into creativity while striving to become a dependable brother and partner. His relationship with Mine, encompassing both business and family life, reflects this stable, committed growth absent in his earlier interactions.
