Description
Kisa Sohma is a recurring character in Fruits Basket 2nd Season, recognized as the Tiger of the Chinese Zodiac. She is one of the youngest members of the cursed Sohma family and is distinguished by her physical traits, which are direct effects of her curse. Kisa has beautiful, nape-length golden-yellow hair and large amber eyes, features that are striking but unfortunately become the source of significant personal turmoil.
In the second season, Kisa is introduced as a deeply shy, withdrawn, and soft-spoken girl. When she first appears, she has completely stopped speaking and is in a state of profound emotional distress. This condition, a form of selective mutism, is a direct result of the severe bullying she experienced from her classmates after starting middle school. They ostracized and mocked her for her unusual hair and eye color, leading her to feel intense shame and to lock away her ability to speak. Her primary motivation throughout her initial arc is to overcome this trauma, find her voice again, and escape the isolation her fear has created.
Her role in the story is largely centered on the theme of healing. Tohru Honda, the series' protagonist, plays a crucial part in Kisa's development. Recognizing the signs of bullying from her own difficult past, Tohru offers Kisa empathy and unconditional kindness without pressure. This connection becomes the catalyst for Kisa's recovery. Kisa becomes very attached to Tohru, viewing her as an older sister figure and calling her onee-chan. Through Tohru's support, along with the understanding of Yuki Sohma, who also experienced a period of muteness, Kisa slowly begins to speak again and resolves to return to school and face her fears.
Beyond her relationship with Tohru, Kisa shares significant bonds with other cursed Sohmas. She has a close, brotherly relationship with Hatsuharu Sohma, who is the first to find her after she runs away from home. Most notably, she has a deep and complicated bond with Hiro Sohma, the Sheep of the zodiac. Hiro is her best friend and harbors strong feelings for her. Their relationship is strained because Hiro, feeling guilty after his confession of love led to Akito Sohma (the head of the family) brutally attacking Kisa, distances himself to protect her. Kisa is initially hurt by his withdrawal, but as she grows stronger, she is able to forgive him and their friendship deepens, eventually developing into a presumed romantic relationship. In the second season, she is often seen with Hiro, and her quiet determination sometimes serves to call him out on his more abrasive behavior.
Kisa's notable ability is her transformation, a trait shared by all cursed Sohmas. When embraced by a person of the opposite sex or when her body is under significant stress, she transforms into a small, golden tiger cub. In her emotionally vulnerable state at the beginning of her story, she frequently transforms involuntarily and, acting like a wounded animal, bites those who try to help her, including Tohru and Hatsuharu. As she heals, she gains better control over this transformation. Her development is a journey from a silent, traumatized victim of bullying to a girl who can bravely greet others, stand up for her friends, and face an uncertain future with hope and determination.
