Description
Basil Hawkins, known by the epithet the Magician, is a pirate from the North Blue and a prominent member of the group of eleven rookie pirates known as the Worst Generation, who simultaneously gained notoriety around the time the Straw Hat Pirates arrived at the Sabaody Archipelago. He is the captain of the Hawkins Pirates and stands out due to his tall, lean stature, standing 210 centimeters tall, with flowing golden hair, red eyes, and distinctive triangle-like markings on his forehead. His attire is elaborate and noble, typically consisting of a white ruffled coat, purple trousers, and a dark fur sash, and he carries a sword with a pommel shaped like a voodoo doll.
Hawkins possesses a notably calm and enigmatic personality, rarely displaying any emotional response regardless of the situation's severity. He remained utterly composed when other pirates panicked after Monkey D. Luffy struck a World Noble, and he showed no visible reaction to news of Portgas D. Ace's impending execution. This stoicism is rooted in his deep reliance on divination; he is a fortune teller who consults a set of tarot cards to determine the probability of every outcome before taking action, claiming to see the fate of everything he encounters. He is averse to needless violence and has demonstrated a sense of honor, such as when he apologized to a waiter who accidentally spilled food on him and prevented his own crewmate from attacking the server. This reliance on fate defines his motivations. Rather than acting on ambition or emotion, Hawkins consistently chooses the path that his cards indicate offers the highest chance of survival, making him a highly pragmatic and risk-averse individual who prioritizes self-preservation above all else.
Hawkins wields the power of the Straw-Straw Fruit, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create and manipulate straw. His most notable ability is the power to transfer damage. By creating straw voodoo dolls linked to specific individuals and storing them within his body, he can redirect any physical harm inflicted upon himself to one of those targets, leaving himself unharmed while the linked person suffers the injury. This ability is limited by the number of dolls he carries, which is typically up to ten, and once a doll absorbs damage, it is expended. He can also transform into a giant scarecrow-like entity or coat his sword in straw to create a powerful effigy that fights on his behalf. Offensively, he can summon a massive straw monster whose actions and effectiveness are influenced by the tarot cards he draws; drawing a card like The Fool, Reversed, can cause those linked to him to attack each other. His tarot cards are an integral part of his combat style, as he uses them at the start of battles to calculate the probability of victory, death, or escape for himself and his opponents.
In the story, Hawkins first appears on the Sabaody Archipelago, where he calmly confronts Admiral Kizaru, using his damage-transferring abilities to withstand the Admiral's attacks. However, Kizaru quickly deduces the limitation of his power and overwhelms him. After the Marineford War, he develops a particular interest in Luffy, repeatedly shuffling his cards to predict the young pirate's survival chances and finding it inexplicable that the probability never fell to zero. Two years later, Hawkins entered the New World and formed a short-lived pirate alliance with Eustass Kid and Scratchmen Apoo, with the goal of challenging one of the Four Emperors, Shanks. This alliance collapsed when Kaidou descended from the sky onto their hideout. Apoo was revealed to be a subordinate of Kaidou, and Hawkins, after using his tarot cards to calculate that his chances of victory or escape were zero, made the pragmatic decision to surrender and become a subordinate of the Beasts Pirates, while Kid and his partner Killer chose to fight and were defeated.
As a key antagonist in the Wano Country arc, Hawkins serves as one of Kaidou's headliners, holding a bounty of 320 million berries. He confronts Luffy and Roronoa Zoro upon their arrival and later battles Trafalgar Law, using Law's captured crew members as his straw dolls to force Law into a disadvantageous position. His most significant relationship during this arc is his adversarial dynamic with Law and the Kid Pirates. He personally restrains Law from rescuing the defeated Luffy and actively hunts for allies of the Kozuki clan. Hawkins' development throughout the series serves as a thematic counterpoint to the more reckless and ambitious pirates of the Worst Generation. His character arc concludes in the Wano Country arc when he is defeated by Killer. His reliance on logic and probability ultimately fails him; he fails to factor in unpredictable variables like Killer's loyalty to Kid or the indomitable will of those who fight for their dreams, leading to his downfall.
