Description
Kanata is the teenage protagonist of the anime Synduality: Noir. He is a nineteen-year-old young man with an earnest and hopeful disposition, characterized by his cool-toned brown hair and grey eyes. He lives in the town of Rocktown, where he works as an apprentice Drifter. His daily life involves scavenging for junk and recovering relics from the old civilizations that were destroyed in a past calamity, all while dreaming of one day becoming a full-fledged, independent Drifter.
At his core, Kanata is defined by his kindness and unwavering bravery, often acting on his innate desire to help others without a second thought. This trait is most potently expressed in his unique and respectful attitude towards Magi, the artificial humanoid beings that partner with Drifters. Unlike many who view Magi as tools or equipment, Kanata treats them as equals and as genuine companions. This deeply held belief originates from his childhood: he was raised in a family with a Magus as his mother figure, alongside his biological father. Both parents died protecting him when he was young, an event that cemented his view of Magi as family and fueled his desire to honor that bond.
This personal history is directly tied to his principal motivation. Kanata is driven by the dream of finding the legendary city of Histoire, a utopian haven that is said to be a paradise where humans and Magi can coexist in peace. He believes that reaching Histoire is the key to fulfilling his parents' legacy and finding a true home. His role in the story is as the Drifter partner to the Magus Noir, a title character who awakens with no memory of her past. He takes her on as his partner, and their journey to uncover the mysteries of her origin becomes inextricably linked with his own quest for Histoire.
Kanata’s key relationships form the emotional core of the narrative. His bond with Noir is central, based on mutual trust and care. He sees beyond her clumsy and forgetful nature, valuing her for the person she is and the strength she brings to him in battle, and he in turn becomes the first person to show her unconditional acceptance. He also forms a strong connection with Ciel, a spy who initially infiltrates his group. Kanata’s genuine kindness and respectful treatment of her as a person, such as bringing her to a place where she can freely sing, cause her to develop genuine feelings for him and abandon her mission to protect him. His friendships with fellow Drifters like Tokio and Ellie also highlight his role as a reliable and loyal companion who inspires those around him.
Throughout the series, Kanata undergoes significant development. He starts as a somewhat inexperienced and naive dreamer, but his piloting skills and tactical awareness steadily improve as he faces dangerous creatures known as Enders and hostile human forces. Emotionally, his growth is most evident when he confronts the potential loss of Noir. Faced with the prospect of her personality being erased, he finally articulates his deepest feelings, telling her that he does not care about her being a perfect Magus; he is simply grateful to have a family again because of her. This declaration of love and acceptance is powerful enough to defy the established rules of their world and save her.
As a Drifter, Kanata pilots a Cradle Coffin, a humanoid mecha, to fight. While initially a novice, his combat abilities grow rapidly, thanks in part to Noir's exceptional combat support. His strength lies not in brute force but in his adaptability and his ability to synchronize with his Magus partner, whether it be Noir or Ciel, allowing him to calmly assess situations and execute effective strategies against monstrous Enders. His most notable ability, however, is not a physical power but an emotional one: his capacity to form profound, human connections with artificial beings, which proves to be the most potent force in the story.
