Description
Born during a lunar eclipse in Kaede's village, Setsuna is a half-demon, one of the fraternal twin daughters of the full-demon Sesshomaru and the human Rin. Shortly after their birth, Sesshomaru placed Setsuna and her sister Towa near a protected tree to shield them from Zero, who targeted them due to a prophecy foretelling half-demons would slay the demon Kirinmaru. At age four, during a forest fire instigated by Zero's ally Homura, Setsuna was separated from Towa when her sister vanished through a time portal to modern-day Japan. Found by Sesshomaru's vassal Jaken, Setsuna had a chrysalis of the Dream Butterfly placed upon her to halt the progression of the Silver-Scale Curse affecting Rin. This act stole Setsuna's ability to dream or sleep and erased her childhood memories. Guided by Jaken and the two-headed dragon A-Un, she was taken to the Hanyō Hidden Village, where the half-bat demon Shiori cared for her for six years.
Once cheerful, Setsuna became aloof and cynical after her separation from Towa and the loss of her dreams. Her personality reflects her father's calm and unflappable demeanor, though she harbored resentment toward her half-demon status due to perceived inferiority to full demons. She developed a pragmatic, survival-oriented worldview, believing violence against enemies was necessary and showing indifference toward Sesshomaru, whom she deemed unworthy of being called her father due to his absence. She respected figures like the demon slayer Kohaku (under whom she trained), his son Hisui, and the elder Kaede. The manga adaptation depicts her as more taciturn and emotionally restricted due to the Dream Butterfly's suppression of positive feelings.
Setsuna possesses purple eyes and long black hair with distinctive red streaks, typically tied in a high ponytail. Unlike most half-demons, she initially displayed no visible demon traits, allowing her to pass as fully human. This resulted from a seal placed by the monk Miroku after an incident at age ten, when her demon blood awakened during a solar eclipse. Restrained by the demon Gaga Gozen, she transformed uncontrollably, tearing him apart brutally before attacking Miroku. The seal prevented future rampages and suppressed her demonic features. When fully demonic (triggered forcibly by Zero), she manifested magenta markings, claws, pointed ears, orchid butterfly wings, and a crimson arm marking.
As a demon slayer, Setsuna wielded the naginata Kanemitsu no Tomoe, later upgraded to Yukari no Tachikiri after the sword Tenseiga was repaired and fused with it. This new weapon could sever threads of fate. She initially carried the Golden Rainbow Pearl embedded in her right eye, granting enhanced abilities until it was stolen by Zero. Her combat style emphasized efficiency and lethality, though she avoided unnecessary killing when possible, particularly while protecting the half-demon village. The Dream Butterfly's curse rendered her immune to dream-based attacks, as seen when she resisted Yotsume's spell. She also demonstrated spiritual techniques learned from Miroku, such as prayers to lay restless souls to rest.
Setsuna's relationships evolved throughout her journey. Reunited with Towa a decade after their separation, she initially rejected her sister's attempts at closeness due to her lost memories. Similarly, she viewed Moroha, her half-cousin and Inuyasha's daughter, with detachment until their shared battles fostered mutual respect. Her coldness extended to Sesshomaru, whom she openly dismissed. However, after the Dream Butterfly was destroyed and her memories restored, Setsuna's demeanor softened. She tearfully reconciled with Towa during a near-death experience, apologizing and embracing her as "sis." She later acknowledged Moroha as a friend and expressed joy during Moroha's reunion with her parents. Her acceptance of Rin as her mother and subtle recognition of Sesshomaru's indirect guardianship (via Jaken's aid and training notes) marked her full emotional integration.
Her character development culminated in the battle against Kirinmaru and Zero. After being fatally wounded by Kirinmaru, she was revived by Towa using Tenseiga. This event deepened her loyalty to her sister, exemplified when she broke Towa's demonic rampage by tearfully calling out to her. She participated in defeating Kirinmaru and Zero, directly confronting the latter to avenge her curse. By the story's conclusion, she embraced her family, including Rin and Sesshomaru, while retaining her core resilience.
