Description
Popp hails from Lankirks village as the son of arms merchants Jank and Stein. Witnessing the hero Avan's strength inspired him to flee home and become Avan's disciple, an act that led to his family disowning him. He is initially characterized by well-mannered behavior overshadowed by pronounced cowardice and a tendency to avoid difficult challenges, preferring shortcuts over hardship. Avan expressed concern over this trait but hoped exposure to Dai would foster positive change.

Physically, Popp is a young man of average height and build with light skin and black hair styled in a messy pompadour. He perpetually wears a distinctive yellow bandana, a constant since age four or five. His initial outfit comprises green plain clothes and a poncho-like surcoat bearing Avan's emblem. After the battle at Romos Castle, he adopts wayfarer's clothes: a darker green jumpsuit, a modified surcoat with a white insignia, and a metallic magic stick. Following Valge Island, Grand Sorcerer Matoriv gifts him the Shining Staff, a sorcerer's cape, and a cursed belt adorned with Matoriv's face that cannot be removed. Later, Princess Leona provides Papnican magic clothes made from material matching Dai's and an eagle-designed wand; both items are ultimately destroyed by Vearn's fire magic.

Popp's core narrative starts on Dermline Island, accompanying Avan to address monsters turned berserk under Hadlar's influence. He serves as supervisor for Dai's training but transitions into an active partner. When the resurrected Hadlar attacks, Avan sacrifices himself using Kamikazee to protect Popp, Dai, and others. Popp initially cries himself to sleep but resolves to journey with Dai to fulfill Avan's final request. Traveling to Romos, they become lost in the Dark Forest, encountering Maam and her village. Popp argues with Maam but later fights alongside her against Crocodine. At Romos Castle, after initially fleeing due to fear, Popp confronts Crocodine alone to protect his incapacitated friends, shattering his Magic Booster staff to cast Glimmer and free Brass from mind control. This marks a pivotal shift as he begins actively combating his cowardice.

His development continues through encounters with Hyunckel, where Popp's strategic thinking identifies weaknesses in seemingly impenetrable armor. During the Flazzard conflict at Valge Island, Popp undergoes harsh training under Matoriv, mastering advanced spells like Zoom and Medroa. Matoriv's mentorship instills the ideal that sorcerers must remain level-headed, though Popp still struggles with recklessness and hotheadedness. He demonstrates unwavering loyalty, feigning cowardice to face Dragon Riders alone and attempting a suicidal Megante spell against Baran—an act that proves fatal until Baran resurrects him out of respect.

Popp's magical abilities evolve significantly. Starting as an undisciplined mage prone to spell failures, he masters elemental spells like Frizz, Crackle, and Sizzle. Under Matoriv, he learns high-level techniques including Donk (gravity-based crushing magic), Reclimatize (weather control), and Medroa (combining opposing heat energies). He develops unique skills such as Dual Casting—simultaneous spellcasting with both hands—and replicates Flazzard's Five Finger Flares technique despite risks to his lifespan. After awakening as a Sage, he gains proficiency in healing spells like Midheal and Fullheal. His combat ingenuity repeatedly proves crucial, negating Crocodine's advantages, exploiting Hyunckel's armor weaknesses, and later dispersing Vearn's Kaiser Phoenix through sheer skill.

Romantic tension with Maam forms a consistent subplot. Popp develops a crush noticeable to others but conceals it due to insecurity, particularly around Hyunckel. His perverted jests and jokester antics annoy Maam, leading to physical reprisals. During the final battle, while struggling to make his Avan insignia glow for the Kaglimmer spell, Popp openly confesses his feelings to overcome fear of rejection. This emotional release unlocks his courage, allowing him to unleash the spell.

Popp appears across multiple adaptations and media. The 1991 anime covers his initial journey up to the Romos arc, while the 2020 adaptation comprehensively adapts the entire manga storyline. In video games like *Dragon Quest Tact* and *Dragon Quest of the Stars*, he features as a playable mage with outfits reflecting his progression. *Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai – A Hero’s Bonds* implements his various looks—Dermline Dress, Romos Raiment, Bengarna Outfit, Winter Holiday attire, and Papnica Outfit—each specializing in different elemental magic or stat boosts. Merchandise, such as Kotobukiya’s ARTFX J statue, depicts his later Grand Sorcerer appearance casting Medroa with LED-illuminated effects.
