Description
Diabal is a young man with small horns on his head and long brown hair, who hides deep within the walls of Caislean Merlin. He is blind, with white eyes, and his body bears multiple traces of past abuse and torture, which are hidden by bandages visible on his face, hands, and arms. His hands also show further evidence of mistreatment, with two fingers cut halfway on his left hand and his middle finger cut halfway on his right hand.
Diabal possesses a deeply paranoid character, a trait born from a traumatic past. In his youth, he was naive and carefree, but a profound betrayal by someone he trusted shattered that innocence and left him living in constant fear. As a result, he lives a hidden life, being very wary of anyone who approaches him. He grew up without parents in an orphanage in Cap-Koillinen that took in the infected. When his ability to use Fantasia with his bare hands manifested during a fit of anger, the Inquisition captured him. He was freed from the Inquisition's dungeons by a man named Piodon, who rescued him and took him in. Piodon raised, fed, healed, and trained Diabal, teaching him the subtleties of Fantasia, and this treatment led the young Diabal to regard Piodon as an older brother, trusting him completely.
However, this trust was shattered when Diabal began asking too many questions about their connection and the nature of his powers, as he and another infected youth named Triton, who had also been rescued by Piodon, started to suspect they were not simply infected but perhaps born wizards who had inherited their abilities. Rather than provide answers, Piodon betrayed them, delivering Diabal and Triton to the Inquisition, where Diabal was tortured, and his horns were broken. Diabal managed to escape, but was forced to leave Triton behind, believing him dead. On the run, knowing that Piodon could potentially see through his senses, Diabal chose to blind himself to prevent this, and he also avoided using his powers so his former mentor could not locate him.
After escaping, Diabal found asylum with a secretive, ultra-conservative group in Cyfandir known as the Faithful of the Hermit, who were operating from within the castle of Caislean Merlin. This group sought to punish those who traded with foreigners, and Diabal worked with them from the shadows. His primary role was to use a magical device to summon creatures called Spectrums, which were giant projections of a captured Nemesis. These Spectrums would attack the lands of traitors, and the Magic Knights would be sent to stop them, but because the projections were not real Nemesis, the knights' attacks would pass through and destroy the targets' fields instead, all while hiding the group's involvement. Diabal's key relationships are defined by this betrayal. He lives in constant fear of Piodon, who is a figure of both a savior and a tormentor, and he feels a lingering sense of loss and guilt over having abandoned Triton. His relationship with the protagonist, Seth, is a significant turning point, as Seth, who shares the same condition as Diabal and was also manipulated by Piodon, convinces him to abandon his fearful, hidden life and emerge from the shadows.
Diabal is infected, which grants him the ability to resist the presence of Nemesis and wield Fantasia. A notable and unique wizard, he can wield Fantasia with his bare hands, a peculiarity he shares with other infected like Seth, Piodon, and Triton. He also possesses a special ability unique to horned infected, which is a physical transformation that causes black, gangrene-like marks to appear on his body. In this state, Diabal gains tenfold strength and can unleash violent waves of Fantasia. To compensate for his blindness, Diabal has awakened to shamanic vision, an ability that allows him to perceive the world by feeling the pulsations of Fantasia, though he is not fully aware of this power and does not know he can enter the shamanic plane at will. His personal development is a journey from a trusting, naive child to a paranoid, isolated figure, and finally, through his encounter with Seth, toward the possibility of overcoming his fear and building a new existence.
