Description
Shinpachi Nagakura, an elderly former captain of the Shinsengumi's second unit, hails from Musashi Province, present-day Tokyo. He trained at the Shieikan dojo in his youth, forging a close friendship with Toshizou Hijikata. Their shared penchant for reckless behavior earned Nagakura the nickname "Gamushin." His playboy tendencies often sparked conflicts with Isami Kondou, though Hijikata consistently defended him.

After the Shinsengumi's defeat at Toba-Fushimi during the Meiji Restoration, Nagakura refused to rejoin due to his animosity toward Kondou, leading to a strained parting with Hijikata. He became a swordsmanship instructor for the guards at Kabato Prison, holding the position for nearly twenty years. His consistent training earned significant trust from prison authorities, granting him request privileges.

Decades later, departing Kabato Prison, Nagakura encountered Hijikata among incoming prisoners. Shocked, he confronted Warden Shirosuke Inudou, who concealed Hijikata's incarceration due to personal hatred over his brother's death. After Nagakura threatened Inudou, guards removed him, though the chief guard allowed a brief conversation. The former comrades reminisced, with Nagakura questioning if Hijikata had watched over him. Hijikata dismissed this with a smile, calling him an idiot.

Physically, Nagakura appears as a bald, bearded elderly man with wrinkles. Flashbacks to his youth depict him with dark, parted hair and a beard, lacking wrinkles. His personality retains traces of volatility; he exhibits impulsiveness and deep loyalty, especially toward Hijikata. Despite their fallout, Nagakura profoundly respects Hijikata for past protections against Kondou's reprimands.

In Otaru, Nagakura provided Hijikata with a base, funds, and foreign firearms. He declined active participation in Hijikata's plans, citing old age, though Hijikata insisted his spirit remained strong. Nagakura speculated if Hijikata sought a place to die, which Hijikata denied.

Nagakura later joined Hijikata's group hunting Ainu gold, traveling across Hokkaido including Yubari and Tsukigata. When the group needed to verify counterfeit tattooed skins, Nagakura used his Kabato Prison connections to arrange a meeting with forger Chouan Kumagishi. However, Warden Matasuke Ooshima informed them of Kumagishi's death during an escape attempt, prompting the group to redirect efforts toward Abashiri Prison.

After Shiraishi's capture by the 7th Division, Nagakura advised waiting in Tsukigata while Hijikata attempted rescue. He later relayed two setbacks to Sugimoto's group: Kumagishi's death and Shiraishi's imprisonment. When Hijikata's rescue failed, Nagakura doubted Shiraishi's escape chances but ultimately supported leaving him captive after obtaining a tattoo copy.

His relationship with Hijikata is central. Nagakura believes Hijikata intentionally provoked their separation to save him from the Shinsengumi's doomed path. This perceived debt fuels Nagakura's commitment to stand by Hijikata "until the end" during the gold hunt. Their bond, forged in youth and tested by time, is deeply rooted in mutual respect and shared history.
