Description
Yu Ishigami, the second son of a small toy company president, entered Shuchi'in Academy through his father's diligent efforts. Academically unmotivated, he focused solely on subjects of personal interest, yet possessed exceptional observational skills. These skills frequently led him to unintentionally expose others' deep insecurities, causing social friction. His bluntness fostered his reputation as an outcast, with peers avoiding him and girls reportedly crying after eye contact.

Demonstrating a strong intolerance for injustice in middle school, Ishigami intervened upon discovering Ko Ogino cheating on Kyoko Ootomo and possessing compromising photos of her. After Ogino implied plans to share the photos, Ishigami assaulted him. Ogino, leveraging his popularity, framed the incident as jealousy-driven violence, resulting in Ishigami's suspension and widespread ostracization. Required to write an apology to Ogino, Ishigami refused despite prolonged isolation and familial strain, knowing Ogino was the true culprit. Miyuki Shirogane later uncovered the truth, facilitated Ishigami's return, and recruited him as Student Council treasurer. Ogino, fearing Ishigami, subsequently ended his relationship with Ootomo.

Physically, Ishigami is a slim teenager with dark, chin-length hair covering the left side of his face, typically wearing a dull expression and frequently donning over-ear headphones. During middle school, he had an athletic build and short hair, but inactivity led to muscle loss. His long bangs symbolize a barrier against the outside world and manifest his social fears.

Personality-wise, Ishigami presents as reserved, cynical, and melancholic, frequently ranting against social norms and popular students ("normies"), a negativity rooted in past trauma and loneliness. He often made socially awkward or perverse remarks, particularly drawing ire from Chika Fujiwara, yet possessed a sarcastic wit. Beneath this exterior, he harbored a strong sense of justice, kindness, and willingness to sacrifice his reputation to help others anonymously. He struggled with an inferiority complex and found comfort in solitude, video games, manga, and anime music, though he concealed his otaku interests to avoid judgment. His hobbies included knowledge of otaku culture, flowers, and technology.

Within the Student Council, Ishigami initially performed duties remotely, avoiding meetings. His relationships with Chika Fujiwara and Kaguya Shinomiya were initially tense; he feared Kaguya might kill him due to her intimidating demeanor. Over time, he gained their acceptance. Kaguya developed a protective stance, demonstrated by lending him her cheerleading uniform. His participation in the cheer club, motivated by a desire to understand the popular students he criticized, exposed him to kind and popular third-year Tsubame Koyasu. He developed feelings for her and inadvertently confessed during the school cultural festival by giving her a heart-shaped gift—a traditional symbol of confession at Shuchi'in. Realizing his mistake, he resolved to improve himself academically and socially to become worthy of her affection, significantly improving his class ranking from 197th to 8th place. They briefly dated, but Tsubame ultimately rejected him after graduation, citing platonic feelings and discomfort with the age gap, plunging him into depression.

His relationship with Miko Iino was complex and antagonistic initially, stemming from clashing personalities and values. Unbeknownst to her, he had anonymously supported her during middle school bullying. After Tsubame's rejection, Iino became more attentive, especially after saving him from a fall during Christmas, resulting in her broken arm. Ishigami assisted her during her recovery. His perspective on Iino gradually shifted, recognizing her as cute and considerate, leading to developing romantic feelings. When Iino became Student Council President, she appointed Ishigami as Vice President, mirroring the initial dynamic between Shirogane and Kaguya.

Later, Ishigami played a crucial role assisting Kaguya during her conflict with the Shinomiya family, physically intervening to protect her from one of her brothers. He demonstrated significant personal growth, becoming less stubborn and more decisive, earning admiration from peers. His character arc concluded with him embracing a more open and proactive approach to life and relationships.
