Description
Hikage is a third-year student from the Hebijo Clandestine Academy who plays a significant role as a member of the elite Hebijo squad in the anime Senran Kagura: Ninja Flash!. She is a young woman with pale skin, medium-length green hair, and sharp amber eyes that often hold a furtive or feral glance. Her expression is typically blank and emotionless, and she has acquired snake tattoos on her left hip, shoulder, and breast. Her outfit reflects her unconventional personality, consisting of a torn yellow and black striped shirt that is very short and leaves much of her torso exposed, along with ripped blue jeans and black leather bindings on her arms and legs which hold her knives.
Hikage's defining characteristic is her almost complete lack of outward emotion, a state she herself describes as being a cicada husk. Her demeanor is consistently apathetic and languorous, often causing her to space out or become oblivious to her surroundings, which lands her in peculiar situations. Rather than being truly emotionless, she simply does not understand feelings and does not know how to express them. To compensate for her expressionless face, she makes a conscious effort to be unusually vocal and explicit about her thoughts and opinions, which can make her come across as socially awkward, brutally frank, and sometimes inconsiderate of others' feelings. She is also highly analytical, often stopping to evaluate things she does not understand, including her own actions.
Hikage's troubled background is the source of her emotional void. She was abandoned as an infant and grew up in an orphanage, where she was often bullied by the other children who mocked her expressionless face. At the age of eight, she escaped and lived on the streets before being taken in by a thieves gang led by a woman named Hinata. Hinata became a surrogate mother to Hikage, teaching her to accept herself and influencing her fighting style. This period of stability ended tragically when Hinata was brutally murdered by a rival gang. Hikage was the one who found her mentor's mutilated body, and for the first time in her life, she cried. She now carries and wields Hinata's knife as a constant reminder of the woman who saved her, and her snake tattoos are reportedly located precisely where Hinata suffered her fatal wounds.
Initially, Hikage had little interest in emotions, considering their fleeting nature to be a nuisance. However, her motivation gradually shifts as she interacts with others. Her classmates attempt to get her to laugh, and she starts to see the value in emotions because making them smile would make her happy in return. Her primary drive to understand feelings fully ignites after a battle with Katsuragi from Hanzō National Academy. Hikage confesses that fighting Katsuragi made her feel more alive than she ever had before, sparking a deep personal interest in the emotions that she previously disregarded. This desire to comprehend human feeling becomes a new path for her to follow.
Within the story, Hikage is part of the elite squad sent to steal the Super-Secret Ninja Art Scroll from Hanzō Academy. Her role in the narrative is often that of the silent, deadly observer. She has a notable friendship with her comrade Yomi, frequently listening to Yomi's ramblings about bean sprouts even if she does not understand the fascination. She has also shown consideration for her teammates, such as offering to buy lunch for Yomi and helping to cheer up a despondent Mirai. The most pivotal relationship in her development is with Katsuragi. Their rivalry transcends simple antagonism, as Katsuragi's overt expressiveness and passion for battle are qualities that Hikage finds both fascinating and fulfilling. Hikage’s personal growth is a central theme; she evolves from a purely analytical fighter who follows orders to someone actively seeking to forge connections and understand the messy, complicated nature of human emotion. As a renegade shinobi, she eventually abandons Hebijo alongside her teammates to form the Crimson Squad.
In combat, Hikage wields a single knife that once belonged to her mentor, Hinata. She is an exceptionally skilled and precise fighter, moving with a machine-like efficiency that makes her a deadly opponent. Her fighting style is a self-taught form influenced by her days in the street gang, and her analytical nature makes her a formidable strategist in battle. She often sticks her tongue out when she is on the hunt, a small tic that is one of the few signs of her focused predatory state.
