Description
Suruga Kanbaru, a student at Naoetsu Private High School, shines as a star basketball player celebrated for her athletic skill, earning the moniker "Angelic Speedster" in girls' basketball. She is one year junior to Koyomi Araragi and enters his orbit upon learning of his relationship with Hitagi Senjougahara, whom she deeply admires. Kanbaru possesses an athletic physique, dark bluish or purple hair (initially short, later grown long and sometimes plaited, then shortened again), and brown or light brown eyes. She typically appears in her basketball uniform or casual sleeveless tops and shorts, always concealing her left arm beneath bandages to hide the Rainy Devil aberration possessing it. She openly admits a distinctive preference for wearing cycling shorts as underwear.

Outwardly cheerful and sociable, Kanbaru enjoys popularity, particularly among idolizing underclassmen. Privately, however, she grapples with insecurity, jealousy, and self-doubt. She openly identifies as a lesbian with masochistic tendencies and a fervent interest in boys' love literature, frequently making provocative jokes or flirtatious remarks, especially directed at Araragi. Described as "polite but inconsiderate," she maintains a perpetually messy living space, relying on Araragi for cleaning help. Her emotional depth includes repressed rage and regret, emotions that fuel the Rainy Devil's manifestations.

Tragedy marks Kanbaru's past. Born Suruga Gaen to Tooe Gaen and an unnamed father, her parents eloped and later died in a traffic accident during her elementary years. She inherited the Rainy Devil's left arm from her mother, mistakenly believing it a monkey's paw. Bullied for her lack of speed, she wished upon it to become the fastest, inadvertently causing her classmates' injuries through the devil's intervention. This trauma led her to abandon track and field for basketball, where she excelled. In middle school, she formed a close athletic partnership with Hitagi Senjougahara, dubbed the "Valhalla Combo" (a portmanteau of their surnames). Kanbaru developed unrequited romantic feelings for Senjougahara, feelings that persisted even after Senjougahara violently distanced herself following her encounter with the Weight Crab.

Kanbaru's supernatural struggles intensify when jealousy over Senjougahara's relationship with Araragi triggers the Rainy Devil to attack him. During the "Suruga Monkey" arc, Oshino Meme reveals the arm's true nature, forcing Kanbaru to choose between Araragi's death or amputation. Senjougahara intervenes, rejecting Kanbaru romantically but mending their friendship and breaking the devil's contract. Though the arm reverts to a human appearance, Kanbaru continues bandaging it, fearing its residual influence. She tapes it nightly to prevent sleepwalking attacks, a guilt manifesting in her meticulous morning routine of checking newspapers for reports of nighttime assaults.

Later arcs see Kanbaru assist Araragi in lifting Nadeko Sengoku's snake curse and confront her past through Rouka Numachi, a former basketball rival turned aberration collector. In "Suruga Devil," Numachi reveals she amassed supernatural body parts, including the stolen Rainy Devil arm, to absorb others' pain. Kanbaru defeats her, recovering her arm and freeing Numachi's spirit. This forces Kanbaru to acknowledge her envy of Numachi's abilities and solidify her stance on justice. Her Gaen lineage grants latent spiritual sensitivity, causing physical reactions in disturbed environments like the North Shirahebi Shrine.

Relationships are central to Kanbaru's growth. Her bond with Senjougahara evolves from idolization to a complex mix of loyalty and resigned affection. Her dynamic with Araragi shifts from stalking and jealousy to genuine camaraderie, often expressed through risqué banter. She forms connections with Nadeko Sengoku, Shinobu Oshino (whom she admires romantically), and Tsukihi Araragi, while maintaining ties to her aunt Izuko Gaen and family associate Deishuu Kaiki. Her maturity surfaces when she challenges Shinobu in "Shinobu Mail," urging her to confront her first minion rather than avoid the emotional fallout, drawing parallels to her own experiences with Senjougahara.

Pursuing a career as a sports doctor later in life reflects Kanbaru's desire to aid others. She retains relationships with figures like Ougi Oshino, who becomes a confidant, and continues grappling with her past with greater resilience. Her journey underscores themes of regret, identity, and reconciling inner darkness with outward vitality.
