Description
Koyomi Araragi, a third-year high school student, saw his life irrevocably changed by supernatural encounters during spring break. Previously anti-social, he distrusted friendships, believing they diminished human integrity due to negative past experiences and a rejection of majority rule defining truth. This isolation began to shift after forming his first genuine friendship with Tsubasa Hanekawa.

That spring break, Araragi discovered the severely weakened vampire Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. Moved by her condition, he offered his blood to save her, unintentionally becoming a vampire himself. To reclaim his humanity, he agreed to retrieve Kiss-Shot's stolen limbs from the vampire hunters Dramaturgy, Episode, and Guillotine Cutter, guided by occult specialist Meme Oshino. Throughout these confrontations, Araragi increasingly depended on his developing vampiric powers like rapid regeneration and superhuman strength.

In the culmination depicted in *Reiketsu*, Araragi restored Kiss-Shot to full power. Witnessing her consume Guillotine Cutter's corpse, he realized she intended to hunt humans again and that his own vampiric nature would inevitably compel him to do the same. This plunged him into despair, leading him to contemplate suicide. Hanekawa intervened, convincing him to confront and stop Kiss-Shot himself. In a moment of emotional turmoil and misguided preparation, Araragi attempted to fondle Hanekawa's breasts, believing it might help resist Kiss-Shot's allure during the coming battle; he ultimately refrained, recognizing the act's inappropriateness within their friendship.

Their subsequent battle raged at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium. Both displayed extreme regenerative abilities, tearing off limbs and heads only to heal instantly. During the fight, Hanekawa deduced Kiss-Shot's true motive: she wished to die by Araragi's hand to restore his humanity, mirroring a sacrifice she once feared to make for a past subordinate. Despite Kiss-Shot insisting death was the only solution, Araragi refused to kill her. Oshino proposed a "miserable solution": Araragi would drain Kiss-Shot's blood until she weakened into a childlike form, leaving them both in a quasi-vampiric, quasi-human state. Araragi accepted this compromise, choosing coexistence over a final resolution.

Following this choice, Araragi retained residual vampiric traits: enhanced vision, accelerated healing, and a lingering fear of sunlight (though it no longer harmed him). Kiss-Shot, now dependent on Araragi's blood for survival, adopted the identity Shinobu Oshino. This established an unbreakable, symbiotic, non-romantic bond defining their future interactions. Araragi later acknowledged to Hanekawa that his earlier attempt stemmed from confusion and fear, not genuine desire, reaffirming the platonic nature of their relationship.

These events solidified core aspects of Araragi's character: a self-sacrificing drive to help others despite personal cost; a tendency toward recklessness tempered by an underlying moral compass; and the formation of relationships crucial to navigating ongoing human and supernatural conflicts. His lingering traits and bond with Shinobu remained constant reminders of this transformation.
