Description
Monkey D. Ruffy, also known as Straw Hat Luffy, is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and the central protagonist of the anime film One Piece: The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventure in Alabasta. Born in Foosha Village in the East Blue, Ruffy ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Devil Fruit that turned his entire body into rubber, granting him the ability to stretch, inflate, and contort his limbs at will. His greatest dream is to find the legendary treasure One Piece and become the King of the Pirates, a title he equates with the ultimate freedom. Ruffy is usually cheerful, carefree, and impulsive, with a bottomless appetite for food and adventure, but he becomes utterly serious and relentless when a friend is in danger or when an opponent threatens the people he cares about. He values loyalty above all and judges others not by their past or status but by their actions in the moment.

In the Alabasta story, Ruffy and his crew take on the mission of escorting Princess Nefertari Vivi back to her war‑torn kingdom to prevent a civil war orchestrated by the Shichibukai Sir Crocodile and his secret organization Baroque Works. Ruffy’s role is that of a determined protector: he fights Crocodile multiple times, enduring near‑fatal wounds and being buried alive, yet never giving up. His refusal to abandon Vivi—someone who was not even a permanent crew member—solidifies his moral core and sets him apart as a hero defined by compassion rather than fame. The Alabasta arc marks a key turning point for Ruffy’s development, transforming him from a reckless adventurer into a captain willing to shoulder the burdens of an entire nation.

His key relationships within the film include his loyal crew—Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, and Chopper—who each fight alongside him against Crocodile’s officers, and Vivi, whose friendship with Ruffy deepens through shared struggle. His primary antagonist is Crocodile, a cunning and ruthless sand‑controlling Devil Fruit user whose defeat requires Ruffy to adapt creatively, using his own blood as moisture to land a decisive blow. Ruffy also interacts with Nico Robin, then known as Miss All Sunday, who ultimately aids him and later joins his crew.

Ruffy’s notable abilities in this film center on his rubber body, allowing him to perform techniques such as the Gomu Gomu no Pistol, Bazooka, and Gatling—delivering punches from a distance or rapid‑fire strikes. He can inflate parts of his body for huge, bone‑crushing attacks like the Gomu Gomu no Giant Stamp. His resilience and willpower are just as important: he repeatedly gets back up after devastating blows, and his unwavering determination inspires his allies. In the Alabasta movie, he does not yet use advanced power‑ups like Gear Second or Gear Third; his strength comes from ingenuity, endurance, and his refusal to abandon his promise.
