Description
Tanya Degurechaff began existence as an unnamed Japanese salaryman working in human resources during 2013. Murdered by a disgruntled former employee he had fired, he encountered a godlike entity called Being X. An atheist, the salaryman criticized Being X's management of humanity and refused to acknowledge its divinity, mockingly dubbing it "Being X." In retaliation, Being X reincarnated him into an alternate universe as a blonde-haired, blue-eyed infant girl named Tanya Degurechaff, born in 1914 in a nation resembling Imperial Germany. The reincarnation carried conditions: Tanya must either die of natural causes or develop faith in Being X; failure would result in eternal damnation.
Tanya possesses a petite, childlike physique but exhibits exceptional magical aptitude. After military testing at an orphanage, she enlisted in the Empire's military at age nine to secure stability and avoid frontline combat. Her appearance—characterized by a doll-like face, military uniforms resembling World War I German attire, and the Silver Wings Assault Medal—contrasts sharply with her ruthless demeanor. She detests feminine clothing due to her past male identity.
Personality-wise, Tanya displays sociopathic traits: she is calculating, manipulative, and devoid of empathy, viewing others as resources. She adheres to libertarian principles and Chicago School economics, believing everything has a price. To advance her career, she cultivates a "perfect soldier" persona—disciplined, loyal, and devout—though this is a deliberate facade. Her primary goals are securing a safe rear position and defying Being X. Adaptations vary: the light novel and manga depict occasional humor and camaraderie, while the anime emphasizes colder ruthlessness, such as deliberately causing subordinates' deaths for insubordination.
Militarily, Tanya rose rapidly through the ranks. After graduating from the War College as one of the Twelve Knights, she earned the aristocratic "von" title. She progressed from Warrant Officer to Lieutenant Colonel, commanding the 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion. Key engagements include the Battle of Norden, where she earned the Silver Wings Assault Medal for defying orders to hold off enemies, and the Battle of the Rhine, where she tested the unstable Elenium Type 95 operation orb. This orb, modified by Being X, required prayer to function, granting immense power at the cost of mental corruption and golden-eyed trances. Tanya views it as a "cursed artifact" but uses it pragmatically.
Her abilities include enhanced physical combat via magic, aerial warfare prowess allowing maneuvers beyond standard altitudes, and tactical innovation. She employs "prayer magic" with the Type 95 orb for large-scale destruction and uses her childlike appearance for psychological manipulation, such as issuing deceptive warnings in a girlish voice during bombardments. Despite her ruthlessness, she avoids unnecessary losses among subordinates to maintain her reputation.
Tanya's relationships are transactional: she sees her adjutant, Viktoriya Serebryakov, as a useful tool and harbors intense loathing for Being X, often cursing it. Her speeches to troops blend blasphemy with patriotism, exemplified by lines like "Our battlefield is no place for that piece of shit, God!"
Trivia notes include her birthdate (July 18), comparisons to historical figures like the "Red Baron," and hobbies like mapmaking. She hides a fondness for chocolate and excels at card games.
