Whisper is a ghost-like Yo-kai of the Slippery tribe, distinguished by his white, wispy form, blue lips, and a prominent black mask-like marking encircling his eyes. He positions himself as a knowledgeable "Yo-kai butler," yet frequently consults his Yo-kai Pad tablet for information about other Yo-kai, exposing lapses in his professed expertise. Centuries ago, known as Nonuttin (English) or Shittakaburi (Japanese), he served historical figures such as Shogun Waitington during the Sengoku period under the name Whispocrates. Following an unspecified incident, he spent roughly 190 years confined within a Crank-a-kai capsule until Nate Adams freed him. Whisper then appointed himself Nate's permanent butler and guide to the Yo-kai World, presenting Nate with the Yo-kai Watch. His personality varies across adaptations. In the anime, especially the English dub, he exhibits sarcasm, a short temper, and often dismisses Nate's correct suspicions about Yo-kai involvement in strange events. Conversely, the games and manga portray him as more proactive in identifying Yo-kai problems and generally more competent. He maintains a polite manner but can seem arrogant, enjoys lecturing others, and speaks with a distinctively variable vocal tone. Historically, his inspirit ability made humans feign knowledge they didn't possess, a power he now suppresses using his Yo-kai Pad. Whisper possesses standard ghost abilities including flight, intangibility (passing through walls), and teleportation. A unique feature allows the Yo-kai Watch to be upgraded or changed by inserting a hand into his mouth. He also demonstrated the ability to summon and repel insects in his debut appearance, though this was seldom used later. His central relationship is with Nate, serving as a loyal, though often irritating, companion. He forms a friendship with Nate's primary Yo-kai partner, Jibanyan, though their interactions frequently involve comedic friction. He experiences rivalry with other butler-type Yo-kai like Verygoodsir, and Komasan occasionally mistakes the swirl on his head for ice cream. Throughout the series, Whisper evolves from a non-playable guide to a recruitable battle ally. In *Yo-kai Watch 3*, he becomes playable after the quest "The Man You Can Never See," joining Nate's team as a Rank C Drain-attribute Yo-kai with abilities including the DEF-lowering Soultimate Move "Blabber Mouth." *Yo-kai Watch 4* introduces divergent timeline versions—Present Whisper and Future Whisper—one recruitable during Quest No. 29. Spin-off titles like *Yo-kai Watch Blasters* and *Busters 2* feature him as a playable character, often essential for specific team combinations or progression elements. Whisper consistently functions as a comedic and expository figure, balancing his self-important claims with moments of genuine utility in addressing supernatural disturbances.
