Description
Whisper is a ghost-like Rank C Yo-kai possessing the Drain attribute. Originally affiliated with the Slippery tribe, he later joins the Uwanosora tribe. Presenting himself as a knowledgeable Yo-kai butler, he offers guidance on other Yo-kai, frequently relying on the Yo-kai Pad device rather than personal expertise. His appearance features a white, wispy body with blue lips and a black mask-like marking around his eyes resembling a mustache; swirling wisps at his head and base shift as he floats. He can temporarily alter his form for comedic effect, adopting costumes or exaggerated expressions.

In the first theatrical film, Whisper accompanies Nate and Jibanyan on a journey back 60 years to ensure Nate’s grandfather, Nathaniel Adams, creates the Yo-kai Watch. This mission responds to the theft of Nate’s Yo-kai Watch by the antagonistic Yo-kai Kin and Gin, acting under Dame Dedtime’s orders to sever human-Yo-kai bonds. Whisper serves as a comedic and informational companion throughout this adventure. During the time-travel quest, he assists Nate and Nathaniel in confronting Dame Dedtime and her minions to preserve the timeline and the Yo-kai Watch’s existence.

Across the broader franchise, Whisper is typically unplayable in early main-series games but becomes a recruitable and playable character starting with "Yo-kai Watch Blasters" and "Yo-kai Watch 3". In "Yo-kai Watch 3", befriending him requires completing the quest "The Man You Can Never See". His battle techniques include "Body Bash", "Drain", the inspiriting move "Slimed", and the "Blabber Mouth" Soultimate move. He possesses the skill "Worldly Wisdom". His statistical profile emphasizes defense and strength over speed or spirit power. In "Yo-kai Watch 4", players encounter both "Present Whisper" and "Future Whisper" during a key quest, with the choice influencing which version’s Keystone is obtained. He is integral to specific Yo-kai Circles like the "Fastidious Three", "White Dog Squad HQ", "Our host will protect you!", and "Misplaced Lies".

Whisper’s personality blends politeness with arrogance and a short temper. He enjoys lecturing others and adopts a formal speaking manner, though his tone fluctuates comically between pitches. An inconsistency exists between portrayals: in the anime and later games, he often doubts Nate’s suspicions about Yo-kai involvement, dismissing them until proven wrong, while in the manga and earlier games, he is more proactive and demonstrates greater competence. He harbors fan-like admiration for "Classic Yo-kai" and exhibits deep pride in the Yo-kai Watch, becoming distressed if it is damaged or missing.

His abilities include intangibility, allowing him to pass through solid objects. He uses his Yo-kai Pad to channel latent energy, preventing uncontrolled releases. Notably, in his debut, he demonstrated short-lived abilities to summon and repel insects via gas and teleport. Nate accesses or modifies his Yo-kai Watch by inserting his hand into Whisper’s mouth.

Whisper pledges unwavering loyalty to Nate after being freed from the Crank-a-kai, serving as his self-appointed butler. Their interactions are often strained by Whisper’s tendency to belittle Nate’s ideas or his own usefulness, leading to mutual annoyance, though they share moments of genuine warmth. He maintains a mostly friendly dynamic with Jibanyan, including comedic bickering. He exhibits a rivalry with Verygoodsir, attempting to outperform him. His initial meeting with Usapyon involves a misunderstanding over name pronunciation, though they collaborate afterward.

Whisper was trapped in the Crank-a-kai for approximately 190 years before Nate freed him. When inspirited by Yo-kai like Dandoodle, he transforms into parodic versions such as "Bruce Willisper" or "Will Smithper". He is involved in fusion mechanics; combining with Jibanyan creates Buchinyan, and merging with Shogunyan results in Whisshogun.
