Whisper is a butler-like yo-kai imprisoned for 190 years before a young boy freed him. After liberation, Whisper gifted the boy a special watch enabling yo-kai interaction and pledged eternal protection against supernatural threats, becoming his guide and guardian. Thirty years later, following the original wielder's adulthood and loss of yo-kai perception, the watch was sealed away to preserve balance between worlds. Whisper resurfaces during the Onimaro virus crisis, tasked with identifying and mentoring the next chosen watch wielder. He locates Natsume Amano, the original protagonist's daughter, and instructs her in using the newly acquired Yo-kai Watch Arcane (also called Yo-kai Watch Elder). This device allows summoning yo-kai for protection against threats like the Onimaro and their transformed human hosts. His responsibilities include testing potential candidates for watch compatibility, explaining watch mechanics, and facilitating yo-kai summons. During the Onimaro crisis, he demonstrates the summoning process to Natsume using a Mitsumata Nozuchi yo-kai. Whisper maintains his identity as a yo-kai butler across both eras, serving as the bridge between human wielders and the yo-kai world. He continues to exist despite the original watch's sealing, confirming his enduring function within yo-kai society.
