Description
Kazuto Kirigaya, born Narusaka Kazuto on October 7, 2008, was adopted by his aunt and uncle following his biological parents' accident. He initially practiced kendo with his cousin Suguha, but shifted focus to computers after discovering his adoption status through erased Juki Net records at age ten, creating distance between them.
As a beta tester for Sword Art Online (SAO), Kirito was trapped when creator Akihiko Kayaba disabled logout, making in-game death real. He adopted a solo "beater" playstyle to shield beta testers from resentment, later joining the Moonlit Black Cats guild. Their deaths profoundly affected him, leading to emotional withdrawal until his relationship with Asuna Yuuki developed. He married Asuna in-game and defeated Kayaba, ending the death game.
After escaping SAO, Kirito learned Asuna and 300 players remained trapped. He entered ALfheim Online (ALO) as a Spriggan to rescue her, succeeding with allies including Suguha (Leafa). Later, at Kikuoka Seijirou's request, he investigated Gun Gale Online (GGO) regarding the "Death Gun" incidents, temporarily converting his avatar. His androgynous GGO avatar wielded a photon sword and handgun.
In 2026, Kikuoka recruited Kirito to test Rath's Soul Translator (STL), a full-dive device using fluctlight technology simulating accelerated time in Underworld. Unaware of Project Alicization's military objective to develop bottom-up AI, his memories were blocked post-testing. During a real-world attack by Johnny Black (Kanamoto Atsushi), he was injected with succinylcholine, causing brain damage and a coma. Rath transferred him to the Ocean Turtle, connecting him to the STL for neural treatment. This caused him to awaken in Underworld with real-world memories intact.
Kirito had previously spent approximately 11 accelerated years in Underworld as a child with friends Eugeo and Alice Zuberg. After Alice violated the Taboo Index by crossing into the Dark Territory and was taken by Integrity Knights, Kirito and Eugeo trained as swordsmen to rescue her. Eugeo died battling Administrator, the Axiom Church pontifex. Blaming himself, Kirito attempted to contact Rath via the Central Cathedral console to prevent Underworld's deletion. A power surge caused a short circuit in his fluctlight, deactivating his ego and emotional faculties. This left him in a vegetative state, capable only of reflexive actions like clutching Eugeo's sword or screaming at night, devoid of speech, identity, or purpose.
During the War of Underworld, Alice protected the catatonic Kirito near her hometown. As foreign players invaded and Rath's facility was compromised, Asuna and allies like Sinon and Leafa entered Underworld to defend its inhabitants. Amidst the chaos, Asuna's voice and friends' support reached Kirito, triggering his gradual recovery. He awakened to protect Alice from Gabriel Miller (Vecta), an operative seeking her fluctlight for military applications. Kirito confronted and defeated Vecta, fulfilling his role in safeguarding Underworld and its artificial inhabitants.
