Description
Kazuto Kirigaya, originally named Narusaka Kazuto, was adopted by his aunt and uncle following his biological parents' fatal accident. Growing up alongside his cousin Suguha Kirigaya, he practiced kendo before abandoning it for a deepening fascination with computers. This passion developed into proficient programming skills, enabling him to build computers from components and retrieve erased records.

He served as a beta tester for *Sword Art Online* (SAO), joining its official launch. Trapped within the deadly game, he adopted a solo playstyle, earning the moniker "Black Swordsman" through his distinctive black attire. Key SAO experiences involved joining the Moonlit Black Cats guild, whose subsequent demise haunted him, and forming a relationship with Asuna Yuuki. He ultimately defeated the game's final boss, Kayaba Akihiko, securing freedom for himself and fellow survivors.

Discovering after SAO that Asuna and others remained captive in *ALfheim Online* (ALO), he entered that world as a black-themed Spriggan to rescue them. Later, at government agent Seijirou Kikuoka's request, he investigated deaths within *Gun Gale Online* (GGO), utilizing a rare feminine avatar for this mission.

Kikuoka subsequently recruited him to test the Soul Translator (STL), a FullDive device for the military AI initiative, Project Alicization. Unaware, the STL connected him to Underworld, a simulation where time flowed 1,000 times faster. During testing, his real-world memories were suppressed, and he lived in Underworld as a child with friends Eugeo and Alice Zuberg. A pivotal incident occurred when Alice touched the forbidden Dark Territory, resulting in her arrest by Integrity Knights; Kazuto intervened while Eugeo froze.

Post-simulation, he returned to the real world with blocked memories. While escorting Asuna, he was attacked by Johnny Black, who injected a paralytic inducing cardiac arrest and severe brain damage. To aid recovery, he was placed back into the STL, returning to Underworld—this time retaining his memories. Reuniting with Eugeo, who recalled nothing of their shared past, they trained at Centoria's Swordcraft Academy. Kazuto became a page to elite disciple Sortiliena Serlut, while Eugeo served Golgorosso Balto, both aiming to become Integrity Knights to contact the real world.

At the academy, they uncovered corruption involving nobles and the Axiom Church's pontifex, Administrator. Eugeo underwent the Synthesis Ritual, becoming Integrity Knight Eugeo Synthesis Thirty-Two. During a climactic battle against Administrator, Eugeo sacrificed himself to save Kazuto. This loss, compounded by an external attack during neural synchronization, left Kazuto mentally catatonic. Integrity Knight Alice Synthesis Thirty—their transformed childhood friend—cared for him near Rulid Village.

As the Human Empire faced invasion from the Dark Territory, Kazuto remained unresponsive. Allies from the real world, including Asuna, Sinon, and Suguha, converted their avatars to protect him within Underworld. During this conflict, his consciousness gradually reawakened. He reclaimed the Night-Sky Sword and harnessed Incarnation—a power reshaping reality through willpower—to help repel the invasion.

Personality-wise, he carried guilt over past failures like the Moonlit Black Cats' deaths and Eugeo's sacrifice. Typically reserved and independent, traumatic events could trigger emotional volatility, as seen after Asuna's temporary death in SAO. His resolve solidified when protecting others, demonstrated by confronting Administrator despite overwhelming odds.

His combat prowess evolved across virtual worlds. In SAO, he mastered Sword Skills like Starburst Stream and dual-wielded Elucidator and Dark Repulser. In Underworld, he wielded the Night-Sky Sword and employed Incarnation, achieving feats like materializing weapons from will. He also utilized "Outside System Skills," such as predicting enemy movements and deflecting projectiles.

Following Underworld's conflicts, he returned to reality, witnessing the birth of an android derived from Project Alicization's artificial intelligence.
