Description
Priestess is a 15-year-old human female novice adventurer. Orphaned young, she was raised in an Earth Mother temple among other orphans before choosing adventuring to aid others.
She possesses long blonde hair tied back with a small blue bow, with chest-length strands framing her face, and blue eyes. She wears white robes over blue garments edged in gold and wields a golden Sounding Staff decorated with blue jewels. Unseen beneath her robes, she treasures protective chainmail armor acquired after her first traumatic mission because it earned praise from Goblin Slayer. She has also used a sling requiring practice and a ceremonial flail during the Harvest Festival, though the flail caused self-injury and isn't preferred.
Priestess exhibits kindness, empathy, and forms friendships despite initial shyness. Observers note her delicate, often tearful or blushing demeanor when distressed, particularly by Goblin Slayer's callous behavior, though she demonstrates assertiveness even while emotionally overwhelmed. Her passive nature leaves her vulnerable to paralyzing fear during extreme threats, as when her first party was slaughtered by goblins and during the Water Town catacombs crisis. She experiences significant moral conflict using her divinely granted miracles under Goblin Slayer's guidance, as he employs them in brutally pragmatic tactics contradicting the Earth Mother's ethos of mercy and compassion. This dissonance intensifies as she gains more powerful miracles.
Her abilities focus on defensive and supportive miracles granted by the Earth Mother. She possesses six miracles: Minor Heal (heals minor injuries, cannot cure poison or restore vitality), Protection (creates a barrier for defense, confinement, or crushing), Holy Light (blinds opponents), Purify (removes impurities, cleanses water/air, disrupts evil magic reliant on impurities), Silence (creates a sound-negating area), and Sanctuary (purifies and secures an area). She casts three miracles per day. Using Purify to transform a goblin shaman's blood into water was explicitly forbidden by the Earth Mother as a transgression. Under Goblin Slayer's tutelage, she learns unconventional applications for combat utility and develops strategic resourcefulness to exploit enemy weaknesses, compared to his methods.
Her development begins with her near-fatal first adventure where goblins massacred her original party. Rescued by Goblin Slayer, she becomes his first party member, accompanying him and adapting to his methods. After defeating an Ogre, she is promoted from Porcelain to Obsidian rank. Later, she initially fails promotion to Steel rank due to perceptions of relying on higher-ranked members. This leads her to temporarily lead a group including Rookie Warrior, Apprentice Cleric, and Wizard Boy, though she cedes command back to Goblin Slayer during a crisis. Her successful leadership protecting others and coordinating rescues during a goblin attack on training grounds earns her the Steel rank, though she questions her readiness.
Key moments include her distress after violating her goddess's tenets with Purify, her growing tactical acumen shown by tricking an Ogre, and increasing assertiveness reminding Goblin Slayer to consult his party. By Volume 16, disguised as the Princess during a siege, she rallies soldiers and calms panicked civilians, showcasing elevated leadership and composure. Her relationship with Goblin Slayer evolves from dependence to mutual respect; he acknowledges her assistance as invaluable, and she influences his gradual openness to trust and collaboration beyond solo goblin hunting.
Her placeholder design in the textboard version was the Female Priest from Dragon Quest III.
