Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti, formerly called Geuse, is a 402-year-old earth spirit. He co-founded the Witch Cult centuries ago and serves as its Sin Archbishop of Sloth. Gaunt and standing 180 centimeters tall, he possesses pale skin with a greenish tint, deep-green hair in a short bowl cut, and gray or black eyes radiating intense madness. His emaciated frame frequently contorts into unnatural postures. He wears dark-purple Witch Cult robes with a green-striped clerical cassock, peach frills, a purple cloak bearing red seams, and a purple zucchetto. Self-harm wounds, especially bloodied fingers from biting, are often evident. Centuries past, Petelgeuse maintained cordial ties with the Sage Flugel and the Witch of Greed, Echidna, tutoring her artificial spirit daughter Beatrice. Over 100 years before the main events, he befriended the elf Fortuna and her half-elf niece Emilia in Elior Forest, regularly supplying them and forming a familial bond. During this rational period, he had longer hair tied in a ponytail and calm brown eyes. His sanity shattered during an attack on Elior Forest by the Sin Archbishop of Greed, Regulus Corneas, and the Witch of Vainglory, Pandora. To shield Fortuna and Emilia, Petelgeuse absorbed the incompatible Witch Factor of Sloth—gifted by Flugel—unlocking the Authority of Sloth. This caused excruciating pain, including tears of blood. Pandora then used her Authority to manipulate him into fatally wounding Fortuna, whom he mistook for Pandora. Witnessing Fortuna's death broke his mind, erasing his memories of Emilia and Fortuna and transforming him into a fanatical devotee of the Witch of Envy, Satella. As Sin Archbishop of Sloth, Petelgeuse exhibited extreme devotion to Satella, interpreting her "love" as a mandate for relentless diligence. He condemned slothfulness, violently punishing perceived laziness in followers. He frequently engaged in self-harm—biting fingers, tearing hair, smashing his head—during emotional outbursts. His xenophobia targeted spirits, whose passive longevity he deemed antithetical to diligence. He relied on a "Gospel" tome to guide his actions, believing it revealed Satella's will. To extend his lifespan, he possessed humans with spirit affinity, maintaining ten dedicated followers called "Fingers" as spare bodies. He led over half of the Witch Cult’s activities, including mass slaughters like the attacks on Arlam Village and Roswaal Manor. His abilities centered on the Authority of Sloth. Its primary manifestation, "Unseen Hand," conjured dozens of invisible telekinetic limbs capable of crushing stone, tearing flesh, or propelling him at high speed. At full strength, he summoned approximately 100 hands, combining them into larger constructs. These remained invisible except to Natsuki Subaru. A secondary power, "Sloth," emitted black waves inducing hallucinations, pain, and madness in those ignorant of spirit magic. He also wielded earth magic, notably "Ul Dona" to create defensive stone domes. His spirit nature allowed possession of compatible humans, enabling body transfers upon death. Petelgeuse targeted Emilia as a vessel for Satella's resurrection. After multiple timelines involving Subaru's deaths, Subaru orchestrated a counterattack with allies including Julius Juukulius. They systematically eliminated Petelgeuse’s Fingers, isolating him. In their final clash, Julius used spirit arts to damage Petelgeuse’s soul while Subaru exploited his visibility of the Unseen Hands. After Julius destroyed his body, Petelgeuse attempted to possess Subaru but was expelled when Subaru invoked Satella's curse. Desperate, he reanimated his corpse as a flaming "Black Beast" to pursue Subaru, only to be crushed under a dragon carriage's wheels, destroying his spirit. The Witch Factor of Sloth transferred to Subaru, who inherited a weaker version of the Authority. His legacy includes Subaru’s ongoing use of the Authority and continued references by other Sin Archbishops. The Witch Cult faction led by Sirius, the Sin Archbishop of Wrath, reveres him; she identifies as "Sirius Romanée-Conti," claiming to be his wife.
