Hanako, also known as Hanako-kun, is the Seventh and leader of Kamome Academy's Seven Mysteries, dwelling in the third stall of the third-floor girls' bathroom in the old school building. This supernatural entity grants wishes for a price and upholds the balance between humans and supernaturals at the school. Hanako displays a cheerful, mischievous personality, frequently teasing others and engaging in playful behavior, though this masks deeper emotions. When distressed, Hanako withdraws and hides negative feelings behind a smile, rarely sharing problems or seeking assistance. A history of trauma underlies a pattern of self-sacrifice and secretive choices. Hanako often wields a kitchen knife and controls two hakujoudai—spirit orbs enabling teleportation, surveillance, summoning objects like elevators or a protective cape, and fighting supernatural threats. These orbs cannot operate in other School Mysteries' territories without permission. A white seal marked with the kanji "封" on the left cheek, placed by the Minamoto family's grandmother, signifies restricted power, implying greater past abilities. Hanako's human identity was Yugi Amane, a second-year middle school student at Kamome Academy in 1969. Afflicted by a congenital heart defect limiting his lifespan, Amane endured unexplained physical abuse, arriving at school with frequent bruises and bandages. Despite this, he passionately loved astronomy and dreamed of becoming an astronaut, treasuring a moon rock. Amane's recorded future in Tsuchigomori's books originally showed him becoming a science teacher. This fate changed when Amane killed his twin brother, Tsukasa Yugi, with a knife—an act potentially linked to Tsukasa's violence. Amane died shortly afterward under unknown circumstances, becoming a ghost and the only known individual to alter a predetermined fate. Hanako remembers this past but avoids discussing it due to trauma. Amane's human appearance featured the school's summer uniform and visible injuries, contrasting with later ghostly forms that include festival attire and modern uniforms during specific events. Nene Yashiro summoned Hanako for romantic wishes, leading to a spiritual bond after both consumed mermaid scales to counter her fish transformation curse. Initially assigned as Hanako's bathroom-cleaning assistant, their relationship evolved from mutual reliance to romantic attachment. Hanako consistently protects Yashiro, placing protective seals on her and prioritizing her safety. After Yashiro discovers Hanako's human past and shortened lifespan, Hanako confesses to wanting her "to live long" and later admits liking "everything about her." They share a kiss while escaping an exorcism attempt, though their status remains ambiguous. Hanako's deceased twin brother, Tsukasa, displays obsessive affection that Hanako avoids; their interactions range from fearful to confrontational, especially when Tsukasa kidnaps Yashiro. Kou Minamoto, an exorcist initially tasked with eliminating Hanako, becomes an ally through shared missions protecting Yashiro, establishing a frenemy dynamic. Teru Minamoto, Kou's powerful older brother, poses a significant threat, having nearly destroyed Hanako and instilling lasting fear. Among fellow supernaturals, Hanako commands respect as leader of the Seven Mysteries, sometimes using threats or coercion to enforce balance. Hanako's efforts to extend Yashiro's one-year lifespan result in morally complex actions, including manipulating timelines during the Clock Keepers arc. In an altered reality where Amane lived as a teacher, Hanako exists as a Red House supernatural luring humans, revealing timeline shifts cannot prevent tragedy. During the School Festival arc, Tsukasa abducts Yashiro from a time-stopped clock tower, provoking Hanako's visible rage. Subsequent attempts to reclaim her involve alliances with former adversaries and confrontations with entities controlling temporal alterations, highlighting Hanako's persistent defiance of fate for Yashiro's sake despite escalating multidimensional consequences.
