Description
Airi Masaki hails from the theocratic empire of Airai, a world that worshipped the Chousin goddesses and resented Jurai's perceived monopoly over Tsunami. As the daughter of the planet's hierarch, she was steeped in its dominant religious culture. Her path crossed with Yosho at the Galaxy Academy when she was fifteen and he was twelve; serving as his tour guide, she softened his demeanor, though he reverted during periodic returns to Jurai. After three years together, Airai recalled Airi for an arranged marriage designed to infiltrate Jurai's royal family and access Tsunami. She resisted this plan with covert aid from Seto Kamiki Jurai, who exposed the conspiracy involving an obnoxious Airai-born prince adopted into House Amaki.

Before returning to Airai, Airi spent one night with Yosho aboard his ship Funaho, resulting in pregnancy. To shield the child from political fallout, she had the fetus surgically removed and placed in stasis. Her return coincided with Seto exposing Airai's schemes and the discovery of her pregnancy, creating scandal. This turmoil was exploited by the serial killer Widow, whose probability-altering abilities escalated societal tensions into mass suicides and civil war. Airi's father and most ruling elites perished, collapsing Airai's civilization. Airi and her daughter Minaho, born after re-implanting the fetus, survived under the protection of Keira Magma, Airi's aunt and monastic leader, before securing asylum at the Galaxy Academy. Assassins from Airai remnants pursued them for years, leading Jurai to formally acknowledge Minaho as Yosho's daughter and grant both the protective Masaki surname.

During her Academy studies, Airi conducted experiments on Minaho to advance her research into Philosopher abilities, causing permanent scarring. Though ethically fraught, these succeeded, granting Airi power to eliminate remaining threats. The shared trauma and minimal age difference in their long lifespans fostered a sister-like bond between mother and daughter. Years after Yosho disappeared to Earth, he secretly contacted Airi through Academy connections, reuniting with her and meeting Minaho. They rekindled their relationship, becoming common-law spouses, though Yosho's concealed existence prevented an official ceremony. Their second daughter, Kiyone Masaki, was born later. Airi occasionally lived with Yosho but maintained separate residences, visiting Earth intermittently. The marriage remained confidential, known only to the Masaki family, Seto, Jurai's emperor Azusa, and close associates.

Professionally, Airi rose to chairwoman of the Galaxy Police Academy and head of the GP's Jurai sector office, collaborating closely with headmistress Mikami Kuramitsu and Lady Seto. She played a key role in capturing Widow, aided by Seina Yamada, whom she relentlessly teased and sexually harassed—behavior Yosho tolerated. Her attraction to younger men like Seina and Tenchi stemmed from her initial relationship with the adolescent Yosho. Airi exhibited contradictory traits: a formidable negotiator skilled in Neo-Academy martial arts, using slaps and intimidating stares to discipline offenders like Ryoko, yet also a prankster who co-authored absurd explanations of Kiyone's death for Tenchi, as instructed by Kiyone herself. She cultivated cooking as a passion after Seto's advice, often practicing in GP Academy restaurants. Her temper flared when Seina jokingly called her "Granny," confronting him while brandishing a chef's knife.

In later events, Airi traveled to Earth with her granddaughter Tennyo to introduce Tenchi's arranged bride Noike. She attended Nobuyuki Masaki and Rea's wedding, standing on Rea's side during the ceremony. When Katsuhito shared the fabricated account of Kiyone's death, Airi initially criticized his insensitivity until he revealed her co-authorship of the script. She later joined others observing Tenchi's reconciliation with Nobuyuki. Airi strongly objected to being called "Grandma," insisting Tenchi address her formally as "Airi-san" to avoid affectionate smothering or retaliation. Her relationship with Tenchi involved playful flirtation, partly due to his resemblance to a young Yosho.
