Description
Sacha, known as Ash Ketchum in most regions, hails from Pallet Town in Kanto. Oversleeping on his tenth birthday caused him to arrive late at Professor Oak's lab, missing the chance to choose a starter Pokémon and instead receiving Pikachu. Their relationship began poorly, with Pikachu disobedient and refusing its Poké Ball. A pivotal moment came when a flock of Spearow attacked; Sacha shielded Pikachu, prompting Pikachu to unleash a powerful Thunderbolt to save them both, forging a deep bond. During this, the Legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh flew overhead, dropping a Rainbow Wing. Sacha interpreted this as a sign to seek Ho-Oh.
His journey diverged here. Traveling without Misty or Brock, he joined two new companions: Verity, a Trainer from Twinleaf Town with a Piplup, and Sorrel, an aspiring researcher from Veilstone City accompanied by Lucario. Guided by the Rainbow Wing's glow, they pursued Ho-Oh. Along the way, they found an abandoned Charmander on a rain-soaked rock, left by its former Trainer, Cross, who deemed it weak. Sacha and his friends nursed Charmander back to health, and it chose to join Sacha's team. This Charmander later evolved into Charmeleon and then Charizard during a battle against Cross.
Sacha displayed increased battle competence. He captured a Caterpie by strategically weakening it with Pikachu first. This Caterpie evolved into Metapod and then Butterfree, which he later released to migrate with a pink Butterfree mate. He legitimately earned at least three Gym Badges, including a victory against Erika in Celadon City for the Rainbow Badge, without the comedic circumstances of the original series.
A significant test occurred when Sacha lost a battle to Cross. Frustrated, he momentarily questioned his partnership with Pikachu, wishing for a different starter. This doubt caused the Rainbow Wing to darken, symbolizing corrupted intent. Marshadow, a Mythical Pokémon acting as Ho-Oh's agent, subjected Sacha to a dream where no Pokémon existed. Realizing his error, Sacha reaffirmed his bond with Pikachu, restoring the Rainbow Wing's light.
At Mount Tensei's summit, Sacha attempted to place the Rainbow Wing on the Rainbow Rock to summon Ho-Oh. Cross intervened, stole the Wing, and placed it himself. Cross's selfish motives corrupted Marshadow and nearby wild Pokémon, triggering a violent rampage. To protect an injured Pikachu, Sacha forced it into its Poké Ball and shielded it, resulting in his physical disintegration. Overwhelmed by grief, Pikachu unleashed a massive Thunderbolt that purified Marshadow and the wild Pokémon. Sensing Pikachu's anguish, Sacha's spirit willed itself back, rematerializing and reuniting with Pikachu. He placed a newly formed Rainbow Wing on the rock, summoning Ho-Oh, which healed the land and battled Sacha.
After these events, Sacha parted ways with Verity and Sorrel, continuing alone with Pikachu. He later appeared in Fula City during "The Power of Us," helping resolve a crisis involving Zeraora and a toxic spore outbreak. He inspired citizens to collaborate with their Pokémon, participated in the Wind Festival's Pokémon Catch Race, and aided in relighting the city's eternal flame. He also traveled to the Forest of Okoya in "Secrets of the Jungle," encountering Koko, a boy raised by the Mythical Pokémon Zarude.
A special episode, "The Distant Blue Sky," provided backstory. As a child, Sacha faced ridicule for his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master but received encouragement from his father, who stated that dreams reside in the heart and require perseverance. It depicted Sacha narrowly missing a meeting with his father at a Pokémon Center and receiving his original-series hat as a gift, implying an ongoing paternal presence, contrasting with the main anime.
Sacha retains core traits: unwavering determination to become a Pokémon Master, deep loyalty to his Pokémon, and a propensity for forming strong friendships. His design evolved slightly in later movies, featuring updated clothing while retaining his signature hat. In "The Power of Us," he wore a Unova-inspired jacket, and in "Secrets of the Jungle," his attire was simpler.
