Description
Whisper is a ghost-like Yo-kai with a white, marshmallow-shaped body, blue lips resembling a mustache, and constantly billowing wispy appendages. His design features a swirling, ice cream-like protrusion on his head, sometimes mistaken for real dessert by characters like Komasan. Freed from imprisonment in a capsule machine beneath a sacred tree by Nate, Whisper appoints himself as Nate's "Yo-kai butler," guiding him into the hidden world of Yo-kai. He later serves other human partners, including Katie and Hailey Anne, across different timelines. His primary tool is the Yo-kai Pad, a tablet device he uses to research Yo-kai information, often relying on it heavily despite presenting himself as an all-knowing expert.
Personality-wise, Whisper exhibits a polite, formal demeanor, frequently using high-class language, particularly in English adaptations. He possesses an uptight nature and short temper, leading to sarcastic remarks and occasional arrogance. A recurring trait involves him initially dismissing suspicions about Yo-kai causing disturbances before being proven wrong, a pattern more pronounced in the anime. In contrast, game and manga portrayals often show him readily acknowledging Yo-kai involvement. He harbors deep admiration for "Classic Yo-kai" and takes immense pride in the Yo-kai Watch's functionality.
His spectral nature allows him to phase through walls and doors, though this power is rarely prominent. He can temporarily morph his form into caricatured versions of himself for comedic effect or to illustrate points. Nate accesses or upgrades his Yo-kai Watch by inserting his hand into Whisper's mouth. Whisper possesses latent powers linked to his original identity as Nonuttin (Shittakaburi in Japanese), a Yo-kai whose belches caused people to pretend to know things they didn't. He channels this energy through the Yo-kai Pad to contain it. Early appearances show isolated abilities like summoning and repelling bugs via gas or teleportation, not consistently featured later.
Whisper was confined within the Crank-a-kai capsule machine for approximately 190 years before Nate freed him. Deeper lore, explored in "Yo-kai Watch 4" and the film "Forever Friends," confirms his connection to the enigmatic Usuta. His role evolves across the game series: he appears solely as a non-playable advisor in the first two main games, but becomes a recruitable, playable Yo-kai starting with spin-offs like "Yo-kai Watch Blasters" and main entries like "Yo-kai Watch 3" and "Yo-kai Watch 4." Specific quests unlock him, such as completing "The Man You Can Never See" mystery quest in "Yo-kai Watch 3" or choosing between "Present Whisper" and "Future Whisper" during Quest No. 29 in "Yo-kai Watch 4." He is frequently essential for forming Yo-kai Circles like the "Fastidious Three," "White Dog Squad HQ," "Our host will protect you!," and "Misplaced Lies."
His relationship with Nate blends loyalty with frequent annoyance, often stemming from Whisper's initial skepticism or incompetence, yet they share moments demonstrating a strong bond. He maintains a generally friendly, if sometimes exasperated, rapport with the cat Yo-kai Jibanyan. A notable rivalry exists between him and the butler Yo-kai Verygoodsir due to their similar roles. Interactions with Usapyon start poorly due to Whisper mispronouncing his name but improve into cooperative efforts.
