TV-Series
Description
Kojiro, sometimes localized as James, originated from immense wealth yet endured a severely sheltered and abusive childhood. His parents imposed rigid societal expectations, arranging his engagement to Jessebelle, who inflicted physical and emotional torment under the pretense of education. This bred profound fear toward his family and contempt for elite society. Solace emerged solely through his cherished grandparents, Nanny and Pop-Pop, and his childhood Growlithe. A defining rupture occurred when his mother callously discarded his treasured bottle cap collection, crystallizing her perception of his worthlessness.
He fled this oppression by joining Team Rocket, forging a trio with Musashi (Jessie) and Nyarth (Meowth). Their core objective became pilfering rare Pokémon—especially Satoshi's (Ash's) Pikachu—to gain favor with their leader Sakaki (Giovanni). Despite their villainous pursuits, Kojiro repeatedly displayed moral nuance: aiding Satoshi's group during authentic emergencies, forging genuine bonds with his Pokémon, and releasing them when believing they merited better lives. His emotional sensitivity and conscience consistently positioned him as the trio's most conflicted member.
Kojiro exhibited sharp intellect, mastering hacking and engineering to construct advanced robots and gadgets. Yet childlike impulsivity and emotional immaturity often sabotaged these talents, manifesting in reckless choices like repeatedly purchasing worthless Magikarp from a notorious con artist. Hobbies such as collecting rare bottle caps echoed his deeply nostalgic and sentimental disposition.
His visual design evolved across the series: an initial Team Rocket white uniform with a red "R" insignia; a charcoal-gray ensemble upon promotion to Advanced Agent in Unova; shoulder-length periwinkle hair gaining waves in Alola; and a cropped bob hairstyle in *Pokémon Journeys: The Series*. Alternate realities like *The Power of Us* film and "Gates of Warp" arc depicted slight uniform modifications or armored variants of the charcoal-gray outfit.
During *Journeys*, the trio adopted the Rocket Prize Master—a gacha-style device granting temporary access to potent Pokémon without forming lasting bonds, replacing their prior pattern of nurturing permanent partners. A Morpeko recurrently invaded their base for comedic effect, devouring their food supplies—a stark contrast to earlier mutually caring Pokémon relationships. Kojiro advocated returning Grookey (Sarunori) to Team Rocket headquarters for "re-education" upon discovering its preference for Goh, contradicting his history of respecting Pokémon autonomy.
Their *Journeys* dynamic preserved core elements: relentless Pikachu pursuits, comedic blunders, and intermittent truces with Satoshi's group. A notable schism arose when the trio temporarily disbanded after a critical failure, though they reconciled in time to witness Satoshi's World Coronation Series finals victory, reigniting their resolve to capture Pikachu.
