Description
Atsushi Kitamoto is a first-year high school classmate and close friend of Takashi Natsume, standing slightly taller with short brown hair and brown eyes. He typically wears the school uniform of a white collared shirt and grey pants, adding winter coats and scarves in cold weather. Kitamoto was among Natsume's first friends after his move to town, though he remains unaware of Natsume's ability to see yokai.

Characterized by a sensible, rational, and mature demeanor, Kitamoto often balances his energetic best friend, Satoru Nishimura. He possesses a strong sense of responsibility, particularly towards his family due to his father's illness. This led him to prioritize familial stability over personal ambitions, choosing a future career as a public servant. He demonstrates this responsibility through actions like scolding his younger middle school sister, Mana, for disturbing their sick father or making impractical purchases, and ensuring his father's comfort by adjusting his blanket.

Despite his reserved nature, Kitamoto is straightforward and humorous, telling Natsume he need not feel obligated to spend time with Nishimura if uncomfortable and expressing wholehearted support for Natsume's relationships, much to Nishimura's annoyance. He is contemplative, reflecting on how he might have faced circumstances like Natsume's transient upbringing and acknowledging his own fears of losing his family and home.

He lives with his parents and sister Mana in a small apartment due to financial strain from his father's illness. Kitamoto shoulders caregiving duties without complaint, reinforcing his role as the family's reliable figure. He enjoys hearty meals, preferring practical, filling lunches over creatively arranged ones, contrasting with Mana's cute lunchbox preparations for him.

Kitamoto and Nishimura first approached Natsume as a transfer student, initially disappointed he wasn't female. Their friendship began when Kitamoto noticed Natsume reading alone; though startled by Natsume's sharp reaction, subsequent apologies and candid conversation revealed Natsume's social inexperience. Kitamoto recognized Natsume's sincerity when Natsume remarked that "a kind person like Nishimura deserves a kind friend like Kitamoto." He and Nishimura often include Natsume in activities, amused by his reactions. Their foundational trio later expands to include Kaname Tanuma.

He occasionally observes Natsume's unexplained behaviors, like during an incident involving a yokai at school. While searching for a teacher, Kitamoto discovered a bell Natsume mentioned, leading him back to a classroom where he witnessed Natsume engulfed in supernatural wind. Puzzled, he dismissed it as a "strange sight" and focused on Natsume's safety, later noting Natsume's calm detachment as someone inhabiting "a different world." Despite such moments, Kitamoto refrains from probing Natsume's secrets, valuing their ordinary friendship. He consistently defends Natsume against school rumors and shields him from blame, even when indirectly affected by yokai-related disturbances, cherishing the friendship's normalcy as Natsume does.

Kitamoto participated as the lead in a school festival Shakespeare play. While the manga places him in Class 1 with Tanuma, the anime initially places him in Class 2 with Natsume and Nishimura.
