TV-Series
Description
Atsushi Kitamoto attends Yowake High School as a classmate and close friend of Takashi Natsume. His sensible and rational personality provides a grounding counterbalance to the impulsive nature of his best friend, Satoru Nishimura. Atsushi displays maturity, thoughtful judgment, and a strong sense of responsibility, especially concerning his family.
He lives with his parents and younger sister, Mana Kitamoto. Significant family strain arose when his father developed a serious illness, leading to financial changes including a move to a smaller apartment and his mother taking on more work. Atsushi shoulders considerable responsibility at home, assisting with his father's care and looking after Mana. This situation directly influences his career considerations; he contemplated becoming a public servant to ensure stable support for his family, prioritizing their needs over personal aspirations. He frequently eats lunches prepared by Mana, though he prefers hearty meals over her creatively arranged ones.
Following an awkward first encounter where Takashi Natsume's intense reaction made him uncomfortable, Atsushi initially kept his distance. However, after Nishimura facilitated their introduction and Takashi sincerely apologized, Atsushi recognized Takashi's kindness and accepted his friendship. Alongside Nishimura, Atsushi actively included Takashi in group activities, helping him adjust to ordinary school life and valuing his often-surprised reactions to commonplace experiences. While unaware of Takashi's ability to see yokai, Atsushi occasionally observes unexplained incidents involving him, such as Takashi appearing threatened by an invisible force or bizarre environmental disturbances like sudden whirlwinds. He typically rationalizes these events or chooses not to press Takashi for explanations, respecting his privacy. Atsushi demonstrates loyalty by defending Takashi against school rumors and standing by him during troubles, appreciating Takashi's quiet maturity.
His friendship circle expands to include Kaname Tanuma after his transfer, forming a group of four. Atsushi interacts cordially with other classmates like Tooru Taki and Jun Sasada. He actively participates in school events, notably taking a lead role in a Shakespeare play performed at the school festival.
Throughout the series, Atsushi remains unaware of the supernatural elements surrounding Takashi. Despite occasionally sensing Takashi's detachment or witnessing odd occurrences, he attributes these to mundane causes, maintaining his role as a supportive friend who treats Takashi normally.
