Description
Tōru Taki is a human student and among Takashi Natsume’s closest companions. She possesses short dusty blonde hair, light brown eyes, and stands roughly 160 cm tall, with blood type O and a May 15 birthday. Descended from an ancient lineage of wealthy onmyoji practitioners, Taki experienced a strict upbringing due to her parents' constant overseas work. Raised primarily by her grandfather Shin'ichiro Taki alongside her older brother Isamu—who distanced himself over skepticism toward youkai—she inherited Shin'ichiro’s fascination with the supernatural. After his death when she was ten, she chose solitude in the family home over joining her parents abroad.

In her final middle-school year, Taki uncovered a youkai-summoning circle in her grandfather’s notes. Drawing it revealed a tengu within, proving the circle’s power to let humans perceive youkai. Overeager, she replicated multiple circles until a powerful youkai cursed her for observing its kind. The curse doomed the last thirteen people whose names she spoke to be devoured within a year. To protect others, Taki withdrew into silence, spurring school rumors labeling her introverted and enigmatic. Natsume and Madara later shattered the curse by sealing the youkai with a ritual mirror, restoring Taki’s innate cheerful, optimistic, and friendly nature.

Resourceful and determined, Taki once confronted the youkai alone despite being blind to it. Academically curious, she studies youkai lore and her grandfather’s onmyoji research to aid Natsume, though she occasionally overlooks others’ feelings. Her unconventional aesthetic sense deems Madara’s feline form irresistibly cute, prompting frequent hugs despite his protests. She lacks artistic finesse and struggles with delicate tasks. Though eager to assist Natsume with supernatural matters, he often dissuades her for safety. Gradually, she seeks deeper mastery of onmyoji arts through her grandfather’s texts.

Taki’s signature ability is crafting specialized youkai circles inherited from Shin'ichiro. While devoid of innate spiritual perception, her circles enable any human to see youkai entering them. The intricate design activates without spiritual energy, and she alone replicates it unaided. She intermittently wields other inherited spells—like seals imprisoning dangerous youkai near her home—though her grasp remains limited.

Taki met Natsume during her cursed silence. After he freed her, they grew close; she became one of few humans privy to his youkai sight. She similarly befriended Kaname Tanuma, another Natsume confidant with faint spiritual awareness. Taki and Tanuma collaborate to support Natsume—such as tending to him when a youkai regressed his age—and share concern over his solitude, wishing he’d lean on them more. She reveres her grandfather but maintains strained ties with her absent parents and skeptical brother. A brief encounter with exorcist Seiji Matoba occurred at Shin'ichiro’s memorial. In later events, her circle expertise proves vital during Natsume’s supernatural investigations.
