Description
Tōru Taki is a 15-year-old student with short dusty blonde hair and light brown eyes, standing 160 cm tall with blood type O and a May 15 birthday. Initially perceived as introverted and mysterious due to a curse from a malicious yokai, her true cheerful, extroverted, and optimistic personality emerged after the curse's removal. This curse involved the yokai consuming the last 13 names she spoke after one year and forcing her into an impossible life-or-death gamble, which the yokai dishonored despite her victory.
She descends from an ancient family of onmyoji practitioners and lives alone in a large ancestral home following her grandfather Shin'ichiro Taki's death when she was approximately 10. Her parents work overseas and were rarely present during her upbringing, enforcing strict rules when home. Her older brother, Isamu Taki, is six years her senior and was estranged due to his rejection of supernatural beliefs, though he later reconnects with her during a university break. During this reunion, Isamu's unexplained avoidance of their home and her cooking stemmed from a shadow-like yokai affliction causing him physical discomfort indoors, resolved with help from Taki and Takashi Natsume.
Raised primarily by her grandfather, she inherited his research on yokai, particularly the unique ability to draw intricate "yokai circles." These circles allow any human within their radius to see yokai without requiring spiritual energy, though their complexity makes her the only known person capable of drawing them unaided. Despite her minimal innate spiritual power preventing direct yokai perception, she diligently studies her grandfather's onmyoji techniques and ancient folklore, gradually deepening her knowledge.
Taki befriends Takashi Natsume after he helps break her curse, becoming one of the few humans aware of his ability to see yokai. She assists him by researching her grandfather's notes and providing emotional support, though Natsume often hesitates to involve her in dangerous supernatural matters. She similarly befriends Kaname Tanuma, bonding over their concern for Natsume's safety and collaborating during incidents like a yokai haunting her home. She adores Madara (Nyanko-sensei) in his cat form, frequently hugging him and calling him "Neko-chan," much to his annoyance. Her relationship with exorcist Seiji Matoba is noted only through a brief encounter during her grandfather's memorial service.
Taki's development includes reconciling with her brother Isamu and addressing his skepticism about yokai. After he discovers an old key triggering supernatural phenomena, she helps investigate its connection to their family home, facilitating mutual understanding. Her social struggles at school—stemming from residual isolation during her cursed period—ease as she openly confides in Natsume and Tanuma, reflecting growing confidence in her relationships.
