Description
Kirito is the real-world identity of Kazuto Kirigaya, a seventeen-year-old high school student and the central protagonist of the Sword Art Online movie: Ordinal Scale. The story takes place after the events of the Alfheim Online and Gun Gale Online incidents, and Kirito is now living a peaceful life with his girlfriend, Asuna Yuuki, and their virtual artificial intelligence daughter, Yui. While he has escaped the life-threatening dangers of the past, the lingering trauma and memories of the Sword Art Online death game continue to shape his actions.
In his personal life, Kirito was adopted by his aunt and uncle after the death of his biological parents in an accident when he was an infant. He lives with his cousin, Suguha Kirigaya, who is like a sister to him. He is a dedicated and highly skilled gamer, possessing superhuman reflexes and a deep, almost instinctive understanding of virtual reality systems. This natural talent has earned him legendary status within various online worlds, where he is famously known as the Black Swordsman, a reputation built on his abilities as a powerful solo player. Despite his confidence in virtual environments, Kirito can be reserved and struggles to express himself verbally, often coming across as direct or blunt. Underneath this exterior, he is deeply kind, fiercely protective of his loved ones, and driven by a strong sense of personal responsibility for others' safety.
When the new Augmented Reality device, the Augma, and its flagship game Ordinal Scale become popular, Kirito initially shows little interest. Unlike the immersive FullDive virtual reality he excels in, Ordinal Scale requires physical movement and athleticism in the real world, an area where he is noticeably less proficient. As a result, he finds himself at the bottom of the game's ranking system, a humbling experience for a player accustomed to being at the top. His reluctance to participate fades, however, when he discovers that a series of mysterious incidents related to the game are causing Asuna and other former SAO survivors to lose their memories of the time they spent trapped in Aincrad. The threat of Asuna forgetting their relationship, their experiences, and the very promise they made to watch a shooting star together in the real world becomes the primary catalyst for his actions. He makes a solemn vow to restore her fading memories, no matter the cost.
His central role in the story is to investigate the connection between Ordinal Scale and the SAO incident, and to protect those he cares about. This mission puts him into direct conflict with a mysterious, top-ranked player named Eiji, a former member of the Knights of the Blood guild who holds a grudge against Kirito. His relationship with Asuna is the emotional core of the film, as his efforts are entirely dedicated to preserving the bond they forged in virtual reality. He also works alongside the friends he made in previous games, including Klein, Sinon, Silica, and Lisbeth, who support him in his investigation and in battle.
This crisis forces a significant development in Kirito’s character. Accustomed to dominating challenges through his virtual prowess, he must confront his own physical weaknesses in the real world. Realizing that his skills in a virtual reality MMORPG do not translate to an augmented reality game that relies on real-world agility, he begins training in kendo with the help of his cousin Suguha, a national-level competitor. This marks a departure from his usual reliance on in-game stats and system assistance, showing his willingness to adapt and grow in order to save Asuna. Furthermore, the film highlights the long-lasting psychological impact of the SAO incident, not only on the survivors' memories but also on Kirito's emotional state, as he is forced to confront the ghosts of that death game once more.
Regarding his notable abilities, Kirito is a legendary figure in virtual worlds, renowned for his unique Dual Blades skill, a special ability granted to the player with the fastest reaction time in Sword Art Online. In that game, he wielded the black swords Elucidator and Dark Repulser. In the context of Ordinal Scale, he initially struggles because his virtual mastery does not apply. However, his innate determination and exceptional reflexes eventually allow him to adapt. For the final confrontation, he sets aside his signature black coat and equips a new blue outfit, symbolizing his new approach to this different kind of battle. He uses his retrained real-world kendo skills to fight effectively in the augmented reality environment. When the situation escalates, requiring a return to FullDive, he proves that his abilities as a swordsman are not dependent on a specific game system, as he leads a party of allies to defeat the one-hundredth floor boss of the original Aincrad, a feat that had never been accomplished before.
