Description
Arsene Lupin III is the charismatic master thief at the center of this 1995 animated film. As the grandson of the legendary gentleman thief Arsene Lupin, he carries on the family tradition with a modern flair. His role in the story is triggered by a seemingly simple diamond heist in Rio de Janeiro, after which he hides the jewel inside a doll. The plot spirals into a larger conspiracy when a young girl named Julia, the daughter of a wealthy American presidential candidate named Douglas, takes the doll and is subsequently kidnapped by a cult known as the Nostradamus Sect. This forces Lupin into a complex situation where he must rescue Julia, recover his diamond, and contend with a lost book of prophecies locked in a high-security vault owned by Douglas.
In terms of personality, Lupin presents a confident and often flippant exterior, but this facade masks a brilliant and resourceful mind. He is a true gentleman thief, motivated by the thrill of the challenge and a sense of personal loyalty rather than simple greed. While he is undeniably a criminal, he operates with a code and is frequently drawn into stopping more violent and ruthless criminals, such as the Nostradamus Sect. A defining and recurring trait is his weakness for attractive women, which often lands him in complicated situations, particularly regarding the femme fatale Fujiko Mine.
His key relationships are central to the narrative. He works closely with his long-time partners, the sharpshooter Daisuke Jigen and the master swordsman Goemon Ishikawa XIII, who assist him in his heists and rescue missions. His dynamic with Fujiko is particularly complex; she initially serves as Julia's chaperone as part of a scheme to steal the prophecies for herself, and later falls victim to the cult's brainwashing. Throughout the film, Lupin remains dedicated to saving her, though his romantic advances are notably rebuffed. His relationship with Inspector Koichi Zenigata, the persistent Interpol officer who is always trying to arrest him, continues in this film, though Zenigata's role is more peripheral to the central conflict. An unusual relationship develops with the young Julia, who repeatedly taunts him with the insult "pedophile". Despite her initial brattiness, Lupin takes on the role of her protector, showcasing his chivalrous side.
Throughout the film, Lupin demonstrates significant resourcefulness and development. After his first attempt to break into the vault fails, he devises a plan to get himself arrested and sent to the prison island where his Uncle Philip is held, believing his uncle knows the vault's secret. When the cult murders his uncle, Lupin recovers Philip's artificial eye, which is the key to bypassing the vault's biometric retina scan security. His resilience is on full display as he survives being shot and falling into the ocean, later recovering on a remote island. In the climax, as the cult's bombs destroy the skyscraper, Lupin uses the chaos to finally secure the book of prophecies. However, when he discovers that Julia has drawn all over the priceless pages, rendering them worthless, he nonchalantly discards and destroys the book, proving that the value of the adventure and the rescue of the girl were more important to him than the material prize.
His notable abilities are extensive. He is a genius-level strategist and a master of improvisation, able to adapt to rapidly changing and dangerous situations. He possesses top-notch gun skills and is a skilled user of gadgets, but his true expertise lies in his sleight of hand, master of disguise, and seemingly limitless luck. His physical agility and determination allow him to survive catastrophic events, such as the collapse of the Douglas Building, from which he escapes using a parachute.
