Description
Leonard Burns is a former Third Generation pyrokinetic and the former captain of Special Fire Force Company 1. Before his military career, he served as a priest of the Holy Sol Temple, driven by a strong sense of duty. However, his faith began to waver after an encounter with the Evangelist, setting the stage for a deeply conflicted inner life. Burns is a physically imposing figure with gray hair, green eyes, a trimmed beard, and an eyepatch, and he is regarded as one of the most powerful pyrokinetics in the story.

His personality is marked by a stern, principled exterior that conceals a growing moral ambiguity. He is dedicated to order and protection, but as the story progresses, he becomes willing to adopt controversial methods if he believes they serve the greater good. This shift stems from his belief that certain harsh choices are necessary to ensure humanity’s survival in the face of the Evangelist’s influence. While he initially appears as a loyal captain aligned with the Church, his true motivations eventually lead him to cooperate with the White-Clads, not out of malice but from a conviction that he must become a “necessary evil” to prevent a greater catastrophe.

In the story, Burns serves as the battalion commander of Company 1, which is closely tied to the Holy Sol Temple. He plays a key role in the early arcs, often acting as a powerful authority figure that Shinra Kusakabe and Company 8 must contend with. As his alliance with the White-Clads becomes evident, he transforms into an obstacle that the protagonists must overcome, yet he never descends into pure villainy. His actions are driven by a tragic sense of duty rather than personal gain.

Key relationships include his connection to the Holy Sol Temple, which initially commands his loyalty, and his evolving stance toward Shinra. Burns sees Shinra as both a potential asset and a threat due to Shinra’s Adolla Burst, and their confrontations highlight their ideological clash. He also interacts with other captains and members of the White-Clads, but his most defining bond is with the Evangelist, whose influence erodes his religious faith.

Burns undergoes significant development over the course of the series. He begins as a model captain and priest, but his exposure to the Evangelist’s power and larger cosmic truths forces him to re-evaluate everything. He becomes increasingly isolated, making choices that alienate him from his former allies, yet he never completely abandons his desire to protect humanity. His arc ends as a morally grey figure caught between conflicting ideologies.

His notable ability is his Third Generation ignition power known as Voltage Nova. This technique allows him to generate and manipulate electricity-like arcs from the flames within his own body, giving him devastating offensive and defensive capabilities. As one of the strongest pyrokinetics in the setting, his power is often compared to that of other top-tier characters, and he can overwhelm most opponents through raw force and precision control.
