Onyango is an elderly Kenyan man, his origins reflected in his name. He has a bald head featuring distinctive metal pieces attached to his temples, connected by cords running down to his jawline. His stature is relatively short, and retirement contributed to an unfit physique. He wears a dark cassock layered with a light overcoat with a high collar, a skirt-like garment, dark shoes, and a pendant bearing a cross-like symbol, consistent with the lieutenant uniform of Special Fire Force Company 1. He previously served as a Third Generation Lieutenant in Company 1 before retiring. Following Rekka Hoshimiya's death, Onyango returned to active duty due to personnel shortages, embracing his former role. His personality blends reliability with playfulness; he rigorously trained to improve his fitness for a firefighters' calendar photo shoot, aiming to fill Rekka's vacancy. Onyango shares a deep professional bond with Captain Leonard Burns, understanding his motivations, and is highly regarded by Burns and other Company 1 members. Twelve years before the main events, Onyango was part of Company 1 under Burns during the fire at Mari Kusakabe's residence, connecting him to Shinra Kusakabe's past. During the Netherworld arc, Onyango dismissed Burns' concerns about his retirement, instead inquiring about Burns' right eye amid frequent small earthquakes. After Company 8's clash with the Knight of the Ashen Flame, he observed Burns sparring with Shinra at Company 6, choosing not to intervene, recognizing Burns' enthusiasm. In the Fifth Pillar arc, Onyango and Burns discussed Company 8's move against the Preacher, with Burns indicating limited support beyond existing collaborations. Later, during events leading to the second Great Cataclysm, Onyango perished but was revived when Shinra Kusakabe manipulated time. After Burns' death, Onyango, due to his age, did not assume the captaincy, yielding the position to Huo Yan Li. Onyango is a confirmed Third Generation pyrokinetic. His role primarily involves strategic discussions, mentorship, and operational support within Company 1.
