Description
Flail is a character from the anime and manga series Fire Force. He is a man who operates as a double agent, simultaneously holding the position of a Fire Soldier in the Special Fire Force Company 3 while secretly being a devoted member of the Knights of the Ashen Flame, also known as the White Hoods. This makes him a spy who infiltrated the company to serve the cult's destructive agenda. His true allegiance lies with the White Hoods, and his mission involves gathering top-secret intelligence from within the Fire Force, procuring advanced materials from entities like the Haijima Industries for the cult's technology, and covertly creating artificial Infernals to spread chaos throughout the Tokyo Empire.
In terms of appearance, Flail is depicted as an older man with a weathered face, wrinkles, and dark-colored hair that he ties into a bun. His most distinguishing feature is his long, fully grown beard, which he has maintained since his earlier days as a firefighter. When acting in his official capacity as a member of the Third Company, he wears the standard bunker gear and a helmet bearing his brigade's emblem. However, when operating as a member of the White Hoods, he dons their signature white attire, complete with a hooded cape and the prominent cross symbol of the Sol God on his chest.
Flail's personality is characterized by his devotion to the Preacher and the goals of the Knights of the Ashen Flame. He is a seasoned and elite soldier who specializes in combat, carrying out his orders with a sense of ruthless efficiency. He has a dismissive and condescending attitude toward those he considers obstacles, as seen when he casually brushed off the concerns of a young Akitaru Oubi during an Infernal incident years prior. Flail is also prone to taunting his opponents in battle, a trait that ultimately leads to his downfall. While carrying out a mission to eliminate the inhabitants of Vulcan's Workshop, he showed no hesitation in trying to kill everyone to stage it as an Infernal attack, demonstrating his commitment to the cult's cause.
He has a significant, though brief, history with Akitaru Oubi, who would later become the captain of Company 8. Three years before the main events of the story, Flail met Oubi while he was still a firefighter. On that occasion, Flail commanded a brigade during an Infernal incident, and Oubi questioned his unit's methods. Flail provided a cold, rational justification for their actions and dismissed him, though he was secretly upset that Oubi and his companion, Takehisa Hinawa, had unintentionally interfered with the White Hoods' true objectives.
Flail's role in the story places him as an obstacle for the protagonists during the Vulcan's Workshop arc and the Netherworld arc. During the assault on the workshop, Flail and his ally Mirage confronted Arthur Boyle. Flail used his Ignition Ability to create his namesake weapon, a large, fiery flail, and clashed with the young knight. Though he was initially overpowered by Arthur, he attempted to strike while Arthur was distracted by Mirage's illusions, only to be incapacitated by the arrival of Captain Hibana. Following this, he retreated with the other White Hood operatives to the Netherworld, the cult's underground stronghold.
In the Netherworld, Flail played a direct antagonistic role against Maki Oze of Company 8. After the White Hoods used their abilities to separate the members of the Eighth, Flail confronted Maki. He commanded several of his subordinate soldiers to attack her, but they were swiftly and effortlessly defeated. Flail then engaged Maki personally, invoking the Preacher and attempting to crush her with an enlarged version of his fiery flail. The pivotal moment of their battle came when Flail taunted Maki, making a dismissive comment about her attacks not working, which she interpreted as an insult to her femininity and strength. This comment ignited an intense fury within Maki, who retaliated with a single, devastatingly powerful strike that defeated the elite White Hood soldier.
Regarding his development and ultimate fate, Flail was originally deceased following his defeat at the hands of Maki Oze in the Netherworld. However, during the series' climactic Great Cataclysm arc, the protagonist Shinra Kusakabe gains the ability to manipulate time on a massive scale. When Shinra reverses the global catastrophe and rearranges reality to create a better world, the effects of this cosmic event result in Flail being restored to life.
Flail's notable abilities stem from his classification as a Third Generation pyrokinetic. He can use his Ignition Ability to generate and manipulate flames with precision, shaping them into a spiked iron ball attached to a chain, effectively creating a weaponized flail. This fiery construct is not merely an extension of his power but a versatile tool he can control freely. He can alter its size dramatically, from that of a standard flail to a massive, crushing mass larger than his own body, which he can swing down onto his targets to simultaneously burn and bludgeon them. This proficiency in flame manipulation marks him as an elite combat specialist within the ranks of the Knights of the Ashen Flame.
