Movie
Description
Ruri Ichigyō is a high school student at Kyoto Municipal Horikawa Senior High School. She has pale white skin, yellowish brown eyes, and dark black blue hair usually tied in small ponytails on both sides, featuring a mole on her left cheek. Her school attire consists of a black sailor uniform with a pale brown ribbon and black skirt for spring, and a white short-sleeve sailor uniform with a black skirt for summer, paired with calf-length socks and black leather shoes. At home, she wears a white sleeveless shirt, blue short pants, and a yellow cotton jacket.
Initially silent and reserved, Ruri displays a grumpy demeanor, avoiding social interactions to focus on reading books. Her cold personality and blunt responses deter others, cementing her status as a loner. This behavior stems from difficulty forming connections, though she possesses decisiveness and confidence in her choices. Her character softens after meeting classmate Naomi Katagaki, whom she initially rebuffs and slaps after he accidentally bumps into her on a bus.
Serving with Naomi on the Student Library Committee, Ruri classifies books and enforces rules ruthlessly. Shared duties and mutual literary interests facilitate her gradual opening up. Key developments include apologizing for not hearing his explanation when he returns her lost bookmark, trusting him enough to exchange home addresses and later WiZ contacts, and revealing personal details like her acrophobia and preference for adventure novels, which she admires for the characters' perseverance. She also donates her late grandfather's book collection for the school's Secondhand Fair, overcoming her attachment by acknowledging books "desire to be read."
Her relationship with Naomi evolves into romance, culminating in her confession: "Dating is something you can’t do alone. So... let’s do it together, shall we?" However, her existence is revealed to be recorded data within the quantum computer ALLTALE. She is forcibly transferred to the "real world" by the adult Naomi (Sensei) to revive the comatose real Ruri, drawing the attention of ALLTALE's Homeostatic System which attempts to erase her as anomalous data. She is rescued by the younger Naomi and returns with him to their restored world.
In the broader narrative, Ruri's ALLTALE data originates from a real-world incident where she was struck by lightning during a fireworks festival, leaving her comatose. The adult Naomi's intervention alters this outcome within the simulation. The spin-off Another World explores her role in the original timeline through Naomi's efforts to access ALLTALE. The film's conclusion reveals a recursive reality: the "real" 2037 world is another simulation layer, while the true reality features human civilization on the Moon where an adult Ruri oversees the comatose adult Naomi's recovery, using ALLTALE to synchronize his memories.
