Asahi Azumane is a third-year student at Karasuno High School and serves as the boys' volleyball team's ace, a wing spiker who wears the number three jersey. He was born on January 1 and stands 184.7 cm tall at the start of the series, eventually growing to 186.4 cm, with a corresponding weight of 75.2 kg. He has long, dark brown hair that he typically ties into a bun and a short scruff of facial hair on his chin. His rugged and mature look often leads strangers to believe he is much older than a typical high school student, fueling false rumors that he is a gang leader or delinquent. In stark contrast to his intimidating appearance, Asahi possesses a gentle, quiet, and deeply sensitive personality. He is known among his teammates for having a glass heart, meaning he takes criticism and negative comments very seriously, often becoming depressed or anxious. He is humble and has difficulty internalizing his role as the ace, rooted in a past trauma: during an important match against Date Tech High, known for its formidable iron wall of blockers, Asahi was repeatedly shut down. Overwhelmed by guilt and a sense of failure, he quit the volleyball club for a period before being persuaded to return by his teammates, especially his friend and former setter Koshi Sugawara and the libero Yu Nishinoya. He gradually learns to acknowledge his position as the ace and declares his intention to never let anyone take that spot from him.
