Description
Hanji Zoe serves as a prominent member of the Survey Corps, initially holding the rank of Section Commander before eventually becoming the fourteenth Commander of the regiment. Their primary role within the military is that of a researcher and scientist, driven by an insatiable curiosity about the nature of Titans. This scientific pursuit is a defining aspect of their character, and they are responsible for a significant portion of the Survey Corps' knowledge regarding Titan physiology and behavior.

The origin of this intense fascination lies in a singular, formative experience during an early mission. While engaged in combat, Hanji kicked the head off a three-meter-class Titan. Instead of the expected weight, Hanji was shocked to discover it was unnaturally light. This contradiction sparked a profound shift in perspective, moving from a straightforward hatred of humanity's enemies to a deep-seated need to understand them. This quest for knowledge becomes Hanji's primary motivation, believing that only through understanding can humanity truly hope to defeat the Titans.

Personality-wise, Hanji is best described as an energetic and eccentric genius. There is an almost manic enthusiasm for their work, often manifesting in lengthy, excited monologues about theories and experiments, which they can discuss all night without fatigue. This passion extends to their test subjects; Hanji famously named two captured Titans Sawney and Beane, forming an emotional attachment to them that led to a complete breakdown upon their destruction. However, this quirky and friendly demeanor coexists with a much darker, more terrifying side. The series' creator has noted that Hanji is likely the scariest character when angered. This is vividly demonstrated when Hanji threatens to drop a religious leader, Pastor Nick, from the top of a wall for withholding crucial information about the Titans inside the walls.

In the story, Hanji plays a crucial role as the scientific backbone of the Survey Corps. After Eren Jaeger joins the regiment, Hanji is placed in charge of experimenting with him to understand his Titan-shifting abilities. Hanji's analytical mind is also a vital strategic asset during combat operations. For instance, during the mission to retake Wall Maria, Hanji correctly deduces the likely route of the enemy, allowing the pursuit forces to follow them. After the death of Commander Erwin Smith, Hanji is named his successor, taking on the immense burden of leading the Survey Corps during its most perilous conflicts.

Key relationships are central to Hanji's development. There is a long-standing partnership with Captain Levi, who often refers to Hanji with exasperated affection, dubbing them a rare specimen or "abnormal" due to their eccentricities. Despite their contrasting personalities, they share a deep mutual respect as two of the Corps' most capable soldiers. Hanji also shares a meaningful connection with Eren, serving as both a scientific minder and a mentor, while also being a colleague in arms. The deep trust and responsibility shared with Erwin Smith are evident, as he ultimately entrusts the future of the entire regiment to Hanji upon his death.

Throughout the series, Hanji undergoes significant development. The journey transforms Hanji from a field soldier with a hobbyist's obsession to a leader bearing the weight of humanity's survival. The loss of their beloved Titan test subjects was a pivotal moment of grief, while the moral compromises and horrific revelations about the world forced a maturation from a naive enthusiast into a resolute commander. Physically, Hanji also suffers lasting consequences, losing an eye in a major battle and subsequently wearing an eyepatch.

Hanji possesses notable abilities that make them an exceptional soldier. These include high-level strategic planning and analytical skills, enough to outthink enemies and command the regiment. Their combat skills are also substantial; Hanji is proficient in the use of Vertical Maneuvering Equipment and engages directly in life-or-death battles against Aberrant, Female, Armored, and Colossal Titans. Ultimately, Hanji meets their end in a final act of sacrifice, single-handedly facing a horde of Colossal Titans to buy time for comrades to escape, cementing their legacy as a dedicated and heroic Commander.
