Description
Hange Zoë rose to become the 14th Commander of the Survey Corps, appointed directly by Erwin Smith before his demise. Earlier, they commanded the Fourth Squad, channeling their expertise into groundbreaking inventions and Titan research—including pivotal experiments on Eren Yeager’s Titan-shifting capabilities. As Commander, Hange shouldered critical duties like expedition strategy, regiment oversight, and recruitment.

Visually, Hange possessed light brown eyes and dark brown shoulder-length hair, usually swept into a high, messy ponytail. A devastating blast from Bertholdt Hoover’s transformation cost them their left eye, requiring a black eye patch. They alternated between square, thick-rimmed glasses fastened with head straps for combat and thinner oval spectacles otherwise. Standard dress comprised the Survey Corps uniform layered over a button-up shirt—white in manga, vivid yellow in anime—topped with the regiment’s signature green cloak. Promotion added a bolo tie to their ensemble.

Hange’s personality balanced vibrant eccentricity with chilling intensity. Joining the Survey Corps driven by Titan hatred, their perspective shifted upon kicking a 3-meter Titan’s head and noting its unnatural lightness. This sparked an obsessive, compassionate research ethos: they wept while harming a Titan dubbed Bean and spiraled into despair when their captive Titans, Sawney and Bean, were murdered. Under pressure, Hange revealed a ruthless streak—psychologically torturing Djel Sannes for involvement in Minister Nick’s death or dangling Nick off Wall Sina to extract Titan secrets. Pushing their glasses onto their forehead often heralded this transition to severity.

Intellectually, Hange pioneered breakthroughs. They deduced Eren Yeager’s Titan transformation required a focused goal, proven when his Titan arm materialized while shielding Mikasa and Armin with a spoon. Hange engineered game-changing weapons like Thunder Spears and devised tactical traps, such as immobilizing the Female Titan’s joints mid-healing. Mastery of vertical maneuvering gear enabled agile, close-quarters Titan combat.

Landmark events defined their path: uncovering Ilse Langnar’s corpse and notebook in the OVA "Ilse’s Notebook" propelled Titan research. During the Clash of the Titans arc, they probed Titan incursions within Wall Rose. In the Female Titan arc, Hange orchestrated Annie Leonhart’s capture in Stohess District and confronted the Titan embedded in Wall Sina, coercing answers from Minister Nick. The Battle of Shiganshina inflicted their eye injury and thrust command upon them amid rising tensions with Marley. As Commander, Hange wrestled with leadership’s moral burdens—consoling Mikasa Ackerman over mutual grief—before sacrificing themselves to stall the Rumbling, enabling the Alliance’s escape.

Hange’s backstory hinted at early insecurities and bitterness, but insatiable curiosity about Titans—rooted in understanding, not annihilation—shaped their legacy. They confessed fears of the unknown to subordinate Moblit Berner yet consistently prioritized humanity’s survival over personal terror.
