Description
Otto Suwen, born into a middle-class merchant family in Picoutatte, manifested the Divine Protection of Soul Language shortly after birth. This ability subjected him to severe childhood isolation, bombarded by constant, incomprehensible noise from non-human creatures that prevented normal communication and emotional development until age eight. He remained emotionally detached, incapable of laughing, crying, or expressing himself. A breakthrough came when his older brother taught him to read and write, culminating in Otto's first emotional expression: a written note of gratitude that moved his parents to tears. This event, his "second birth-wail," symbolized his recognition of familial love and the beginning of his ability to differentiate human voices.

Around age ten, Otto identified his power as the Divine Protection of Soul Language, enabling communication with animals and non-human entities, though it required mimicking their vocalizations. After confiding only in his older brother, who warned him to keep it secret, his younger brother overheard and publicly exposed him. Forced to demonstrate by communicating with insects, Otto earned the derogatory nickname "Zodda-Bug Boy" (Zodda mushi yāro), cementing his social ostracization. He resolved to seal his Divine Protection.

At fourteen, Otto attempted to rebuild his reputation. A pivotal moment occurred when he was wrongfully implicated in a romantic scandal involving a prominent family's daughter. To clear his name, he used his sealed Divine Protection to uncover her involvement with eight other men. This revelation led her to hire an assassin, forcing Otto to flee Picoutatte on his family's earth dragon, Frufoo. His father arranged for him to join a merchant acquaintance's company; he trained there before becoming an independent traveling merchant at sixteen.

Otto's merchant career suffered extraordinary misfortune, plagued by natural disasters, bandit attacks, and misguided trades—like exchanging metal wares for oil just before diplomatic relations collapsed with Gusteko, leaving him financially unstable. Frufoo, possessing the Divine Protection of Wind Evasion enabling wind-resistant travel and notable endurance, remained his sole companion. Their bond deepened through nightly conversations, though Otto's habit of speaking aloud to Frufoo deterred potential merchant partners.

Facing ruin after investing all capital in oil rendered worthless by Gusteko's geopolitical turmoil, Otto accepted a risky job transporting passengers via dragon carriage. This led to his capture by the Witch Cult. Imprisoned and separated from Frufoo, Otto succumbed to despair until Natsuki Subaru rescued him. This prompted Otto's "third birth-wail"—an outpouring of tears symbolizing his renewed will to live and repay debts.

Indebted to Subaru, Otto aligned with the Emilia Camp. He leveraged his mercantile acumen to manage finances and taxes, and his Divine Protection for strategic intelligence gathering from animals. During the Battle of Priestella, he coordinated with the Felt Camp to repel the Witch Cult, notably aiding in countering the Sin Archbishop of Greed. His negotiation and mediation skills proved vital in resolving conflicts within Lugunica and beyond, cementing his role as the camp's pragmatic advisor. Otto views friendship and loyalty through the lens of a merchant's integrity, defining his existence by repaying debts—to family, Subaru, or allies.
