Description
Connie Springer originates from the rural village of Ragako, located within Wall Rose. His initial goal in joining the 104th Training Corps was to eventually serve in the Military Police Brigade, a path he believed would bring honor to his family and village. Despite his aspirations for a comfortable life in the interior, he ultimately chose to join the Survey Corps, inspired by the impassioned convictions of his comrades, though he was reluctant to admit their influence on his decision.

Connie is characterized by an outgoing and impetuous nature. In his early days as a trainee, he was often unfocused, cheerful, and prone to goofing around, frequently engaging in mischief with his close friend Sasha Blouse. He enjoys flaunting his natural talents, particularly his proficiency with the vertical maneuvering equipment, and can be somewhat dense or slow to grasp complex situations. However, as the story progresses and he faces repeated tragedies, his naive enthusiasm falls away. While he retains some of his difficulty in comprehending new developments, he becomes more serious, easily frustrated by his own limits, and increasingly prone to anger and hatred in the face of betrayal and loss. Despite these changes, a core part of Connie is his deep care for the well-being of his friends and family. This loyalty is severely tested when he attempts to feed a young boy to his Titanized mother in a desperate bid to restore her humanity, an act of drastic obsession he ultimately abandons when he realizes the cruelty of what he is doing.

Connie’s primary motivation shifts from making his family proud to seeking vengeance and finding a way to save his mother after his village is destroyed. The discovery that his mother has been transformed into a Pure Titan and that his entire village was massacred by the Beast Titan becomes the central trauma of his life. This fuels a deep-seated need for justice and a willingness to take extreme measures to protect the few people he has left. In the Survey Corps, he aims to prove his worth as a soldier and contribute meaningfully to operations despite his lack of political power or special abilities.

Connie plays a consistent role as a capable and reliable soldier within the Survey Corps, particularly as a member of the special operations unit. He participates in many of the key battles against the Titans, including the Battle of Trost District and the mission to retake Shiganshina. While not a primary strategist or leader, his physical abilities make him a valuable asset in combat. Later, he becomes part of the alliance formed to stop the global genocide known as the Rumbling, fighting alongside former enemies to prevent the destruction of the world outside the walls.

Connie’s most significant relationship is with Sasha Blouse, with whom he shares a bond described as feeling like losing half of himself when she dies. He is also close to Eren Yeager, Jean Kirstein, and Armin Arlert. He shares a brother-like dynamic with Eren, though they occasionally clash due to Eren’s goal-oriented nature contrasting with Connie’s focus on protecting the people around him. Jean’s actions and words have a powerful influence on Connie, ultimately being the reason he decides to join the Survey Corps. Connie greatly trusts and relies on Armin’s strategic mind, though this trust is strained when Connie attempts to sacrifice Falco to his mother, a crisis resolved when Armin offers his own life instead. His relationship with Reiner Braun is complex, shifting from camaraderie, to bitter hostility after learning of Reiner’s role as the Armored Titan and his betrayal, and finally to a tentative understanding when they are forced to cooperate as allies.

Connie undergoes significant development, transforming from a somewhat goofy and self-centered recruit into a battle-hardened and emotionally scarred soldier. The destruction of his village and the loss of his mother shatters his optimism and plunges him into grief and anger. This culminates in his moral low point when he kidnaps Falco Grice, lying to the child and preparing to feed him to his Titan mother. The intervention of Armin, who is willing to sacrifice himself, brings Connie back from the brink. He comes to the realization that his mother would not want him to commit such an atrocity, and he resolves to honor her memory by being a good soldier and striving to save the people of the outside world. This event marks his return to a more principled, albeit still hardened, version of himself.

Connie is notable for his agility and mastery of the vertical maneuvering equipment, possessing a natural talent that he openly boasts about. While his academic performance and strategic thinking are average at best, his physical abilities are exceptional, allowing him to survive numerous life-threatening battles where many others perished. His balance and quick reflexes make him a formidable fighter in Titan-infested environments. In later years, he grows significantly taller and his facial features sharpen, reflecting his increased maturity and the heavy burdens he carries. On one occasion, he himself transforms into a Pure Titan but is later reverted to his human form.
