Description
Mezo Shoji, also known as the Tentacle Hero Tentacole, is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School in My Hero Academia. He is a mutation-type hero-in-training with a tall, muscular build and multiple tentacle-like limbs growing from his shoulders. He wears a mask covering the lower half of his face, a choice he made after his appearance frightened a young girl when he was younger.
Shoji's Quirk is Dupli-Arms, which allows him to create extra tentacle-like limbs from his body. The tips of these limbs can replicate other body parts, including eyes, ears, mouths, and hands. This ability makes him highly effective for reconnaissance, surveillance, and sensory detection, as he can use multiple organs simultaneously to cover blind spots and gather information over long distances. He also uses his arms for close combat, protection, and carrying multiple people. His Quirk earned him 6th place in the Quirk Apprehension Test and makes him a valuable asset in chaotic, multi-person battles where situational awareness is critical.
Shoji has a calm, stoic, and gentle nature. Despite his intimidating appearance, he is kind-hearted, self-sacrificing, and deeply committed to protecting others. His motivation stems from a traumatic childhood event: after saving a girl from drowning, he was severely beaten by villagers who held archaic, prejudiced views toward heteromorphs, resulting in scars on his face. Rather than becoming bitter, Shoji chose to focus on the positive feeling of having helped someone, and he resolved to become a hero who could change society's view of those who look different. He wears his mutation as a badge of honor and strives to create a world where heteromorphs are accepted.
In the story, Shoji serves primarily as a reconnaissance and support specialist within Class 1-A. He saved Izuku Midoriya multiple times, including from a rampaging Dark Shadow during the forest training camp and from Himiko Toga. He holds a strong camaraderie with Midoriya, built on mutual respect. He shares a close friendship with Fumikage Tokoyami, which was highlighted during the training camp. As co-vice representative of Class 1-A, he works alongside Kyoka Jiro, complementing her leadership with his protective and thoughtful approach. He also maintains respectful relationships with classmates from other classes, such as Itsuka Kendo, after facing her in the U.A. Sports Festival.
Shoji's development is marked by his growing confidence in his role as a hero and his determination to prove that heteromorphs can be heroes. His backstory, particularly during the Final Season's narrative arcs, underscores his resolve to challenge discrimination and his commitment to using his Quirk for the good of others. He continues to act as a steady, reliable presence in Class 1-A, demonstrating that true heroism is defined by character and action, not appearance.
